2013 TACA New Works Grants Given

Second Thought Theatre, Undermain Theatre and Voices of Change receive a total of $100,000 in the second round of Donna Wilhelm Family New Works Fund grants.

published Thursday, June 20, 2013

Two Dallas theater companies and one music ensemble are the recipients of the second round of TACA Donna Wilhelm Family New Works Fund grants, announced today. Second Thought Theatre, Undermain Theatre and Voices of Change will share $100,000 for new works to be produced in the next few seasons.

Undermain has already announced their showAbraham Zobell’s Home Movie: Final Reel by New York playwright and frequent Undermain collaborator Len Jenkin, which will have its world premiere in 2014. Second Thought's grant will go toward a new play by Steven Walters and Erik Archilla, about Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. Voices of Change receives its grant for a new composition by Xi Wang, a professor at Southern Methodist University, who VOC introduced to local audiences in 2010.

In the first round of these grants, announced this time last year, the recipients were African-American Repertory Theatre for a new play by Dallas writer Jonathan Norton; Cara Mía Theatre Company for a work by David Lozano and company; and Dallas Theater Center for a work by playwright-in-residence and New Yorker Will Power. Of those, so far we've witnessed the results of one—with Cara Mía's The Dreamers: A Bloodline, which just ended a run at the Latino Cultural Center.

Here's more from the TACA news release:

DALLAS – June 20, 2013.  TACA (The Arts Community Alliance) has announced the grantees of the 2013 TACA Donna Wilhelm Family New Works Fund to support the development of new works in the area of performing arts. The 2013 recipients of $100,000 in award money are Second Thought Theatre, Undermain Theatre and Voices of Change.

Fourteen nationally recognized peer review panelists reviewed thirteen applications to select the three beneficiaries. For the second year in a row, TACA sought input from an impressive collection of national arts practitioners, who judged each of the submissions based on level of innovation, impact on the discipline and impact on the originator of the work.

“We are proud to announce this year’s three beneficiaries, and we’re excited to see their innovative work come to life and have an impact on a national level,” said TACA’s President and Executive Director Rebecca Young. “We also applaud and sincerely thank Donna Wilhelm and all of the fund’s supporters for their contributions to support the creation and development of new work in the Dallas community.”

TACA grants will support the following:

Second Thought Theatre will receive $40,000 for the development and performance of “This Present Tyranny” by creators Steven Walters and Erik Archilla. The show portrays a biography of John Wilkes Booth and the highly controversial events leading up to and following the assassination of President Lincoln. Developing the work of Dallas playwrights is a core value for Second Thought Theatre.

Undermain Theatre will also receive $40,000 for “Abraham Zobell’s Home Movie: Final Reel” by playwright Len Jenkin. The work is about an elderly, bedridden man who escapes from his wife’s care to embark on a final journey, looking back on his life and 70 years of the American century. The production will feature a film made by a local artist, and a jazz and blues score.

Voices of Change, the Southwest’s premier classical music ensemble, will receive a $20,000 grant for “Tibet Fantasia” by creator Xi Wang. In three movements, the 30-minute piece explores the mysterious land of Tibet, music folklores, distinguished culture and exotic landscapes. The piece will utilize six musicians, projections, dancers and audience participation.

Donna Wilhelm, in whose family’s name the fund is established, remarked “Our hope with these New Works grants is to provide support for a transformational project, one that will serve as a catalyst for the organization to take the next step in their journey of artistic excellence.”

ABOUT TACA Donna Wilhelm Family New Works Fund:

In January 2012, TACA launched a new grants initiative: the TACA Donna Wilhelm Family New Works Fund.  This fund grants up to $100,000 each year, for at least three years, to support the creation and performances of new work in Dallas County by one or more of TACA’s annual beneficiaries. Applicants must be among those organizations selected to receive annual funding during the same application/funding cycle. New works supported by the Fund may include dance, plays, musical theater, solo and choral vocal works, instrumental performances, spoken word performances or any comparable work presented for an audience. The grants are intended to particularly encourage the creation of innovative and experimental work in the area of performing arts.  This fund is in addition to the $1.2 million granted in January to 42 local performing arts organizations. For those interested in supporting this Fund, contact TACA’s President and Executive Director Becky Young at 214-855-0400.
