The winners for Stage West's Fifth Annual Texas Playwriting Contest have been announced, and first place goes to Fort Worth playwright Laura Lundgren Smith, for her play Seamless. That play, along with the second place winner, will receive a staged reading in February at Stage West. (Seamless was also read in Kitchen Dog Theater's 2007 New Works Festival; it has been revised since.)
It should be noted that the winner of last year's competition, Larry Herold's The Sports Page, has made it beyond the staged reading process and will have a full production this coming season at Stage West.
Here's more from Stage West's news release:
The 36 entries were narrowed down to a final five. Judging was 100 percent blind.
All plays were submitted by April 15, 2011. Every playwright has a history of at least two years in the great state of Texas. The first place winner will receive a cash prize and a professional reading/workshop in February 2012 during Stage West's New Play Reading Festival.
Dates for the festival are set for February 25 and 26, 2012. The Festival is free to Stage West Subscribers and $5 for general admission audience. The second place play will also receive a reading/workshop during the festival.
