Update June 22, 2020: Since this story was published, the opening performance was changed from MOMIX to Complexions Contemporary Ballet.

Dallas — After assessing the landscape of dance companies planning tours in the coming season, given the complications brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, TITAS/Dance Unbound has announced a 2020-21 season of companies from the U.S., the first time in its history to not offer any international groups.

The season begins with an opening night gala to help make up for the group's canceled Command Performance, TITAS' biggest annual fundraiser. That's followed by two nights of the popular group Complexions Contemporary Ballet.

"There's a funny irony of starting our season at this time with going down the rabbit hole or going through the looking glass," says Santos.

Because the Dallas Opera won't start its next season until March 2021, that freed up some slots in the Winspear Opera House, so this TITAS season will be mostly at Winspear, with only the two final shows in spring 2021 at Moody Performance Hall.

"The Winspear gives more options for social distancing [in the audience], Santos says. There will also be more restrictions for the touring companies back stage, such as no guests.

Santos says planning an arts season is tricky given that rates of infections keep rising in some states, including ours.

"We have to make plans to move forward," he says. "One of the realities is that we're in the middle of this, we will get through this, and history has shown that we get through pandemics like Spanish Flu and polio. It about figuring out how to work and live while these problems are being solved by science."

"We're cautiously optimistic."
