Dallas — Big changes are in store for the 2018-2019 season for Teatro Dallas. First, the new artistic director of the organization is Sorany Gutiérrez, in a position made possible by The Meadows Foundation and The Moody Fund for the Arts. The interim executive director is Sara Cardona, taking over for previously announced executive director Nestor Eduardo Estrada, who was set to replace co-founder Cora Cardona, who announced her "retirement" in 2017.

Cora Cardona will still be involved, as she is writing and directing the new season.

The other major change is that TD is moving to the Latino Cultural Center for its mainstage productions; it will become one of the core companies in that space, which will eventually have a new black box space as part of the cultural facilities improvements vote in the last bond election. TD’s home for the past decade, on Record Crossing, will be vacated by the company later this year.

The 2018-19 season opens with Cora Cardona’s 1968, dealing with an intersection of events that year in Texas, Vietnam, and Mexico City, specfically at the plaza of Tlatelolco, now called the plaza de las Tres Culturas. It will be co-directed by Cora Cardona and Gutiérrez. The mainstage production in the spring is Migdalia Cruz’s Fur, a modern take on the Beauty and the Beast fable (Dallas last saw this play in 1999 at Kitchen Dog Theater).

The fall also brings a one-night event called Noche Cosmica, featuring a staged reading of Indigenous poetry, a special Yaqui dance, La Danza del Venado and "Maria Sabina" cocktails; that is at the Wild Detectives. In the spring, the children’s touring production of Bongo Talks by Omar Padilla—recently seen in Prism Movement Theater’s BruNO and lOUIe at the Festival of Independent Theatres—features clowning, puppetry and music.

Below is the lineup with titles, dates and descriptions:

Fur by Migdalia Cruz, was developed at INTAR's playwrights Labratory and Latino Chicago Theater Company, where it was first produced in 1995. It is the story of Citrona, a hirsute young woman who is purchased at a sideshow to become the bride of a young man with a fetish for animals. Set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, this tragi-comic, triangular love story reimagines a beauty and a beast, but with uncompromising results.

We will kick off our interactive touring show with an afternoon of activities. This production features music, marionettes and clowning techniques to reveal the power of intuition and the senses in helping children adapt to challenges.
