Dallas — The 2018-2019 Broadway Series for the AT&T Performing Arts Center has been announced, and if you assumed that Dallas Summer Musicals had snapped up all the new tours, well, you'd be wrong.

Five of the six titles on the subscription series are new tours, and while one of those is a revival, William Finn's Falsettos, it's a show that is rarely revived. The new musicals and plays in the season are A Bronx Tale, The Play That Goes Wrong, Bat Out of Hell, and Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Bat Out of Hell, which is the Meat Loaf jukebox musical, is the only title that has not been on Broadway.

The sixth title on the season is the previously announced Hairspray, which is a production from the Dallas Theater Center.

The Broadway Series also has three non-subscription specials: The musical of the beloved memoir/film A Christmas Story, by red-hot duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, the films La La Land and The Greatest Showman), the long-running hit Chicago, and a return engagement of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

In one noticeable change for ATTPAC, some of the subscription shows are just one week: Falsettos and The Play That Goes Wrong. Hairspray is nine days. The other subscription shows are the standard two weeks.

Fun fact: The current Broadway production of The Play That Goes Wrong features two North Texans in the cast, Akron Watson and Jonathan Fielding.

Below is a breakdown of the season, with description, dates and subscription information.

HAIRSPRAY

(Dallas Theater Center production)

(presented locally by Baylor University Medical Center, a part of Baylor Scott & White Health)

You can't stop the beat in this big and bold musical about one girl's inspiring dream to dance.

The 1950s are out, and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire – to dance on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network... all without denting her 'do!

A CHRISTMAS STORY

(presented locally by Children’s Health)

December 12 - December 16, 2018

From the songwriting team behind the smash hit Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen and the Academy Award-winning film La La Land, A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL, brings the classic 1983 movie to hilarious life on stage! Set in 1940s Indiana, a young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder® Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. Nominated for three 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical, the Associated Press calls A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL “a joyous Christmas miracle,” while The New York Times writes “I was dazzled. You’d have to have a Grinch-sized heart not to feel a smile spreading across your face.”

A BRONX TALE

December 26 – January 6, 2019

Broadway’s hit crowd-pleaser takes you to the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s- where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be.

Bursting with high-energy dance numbers and original doo-wop tunes from the songwriter of Beauty and the Beast, A BRONX TALE is an unforgettable story of loyalty and family.

Academy Award® winner Robert De Niro and Tony® winner Jerry Zaks direct this streetwise musical- based on Academy Award nominee Chazz Palminteri’s story- that The New York Times hails as “A Critics’ Pick! The kind of tale that makes you laugh and cry.”

“A combination of Jersey Boys and West Side Story.” – amNewYork

FALSETTOS

February 12 – February 17, 2019

“An exceptional production of a perfect musical.”

- The New York Times, October 27, 2016

William Finn and James Lapine’s groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical FALSETTOS returned to Broadway in an all new production from Lincoln Center Theater, and was nominated for Five 2017 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.

FALSETTOS revolves around the life of a charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, lover, about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the lesbians next door. It’s a hilarious and achingly poignant look at the infinite possibilities that make up a modern family… and a beautiful reminder that love can tell a million stories.

Called “A GUT-BUSTING HIT” (The New York Times) and “THE FUNNIEST PLAY BROADWAY HAS EVER SEEN” (HuffPost), this classic murder mystery is chock-full of mishaps and madcap mania delivering “A RIOTOUS EXPLOSION OF COMEDY” (Daily Beast). Welcome to opening night of The Murder at Haversham Manor where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines) – sure to bring down the house!

BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL

June 18 – June 23, 2019

Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll.  But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice.

Beautiful – THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

Featuring a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, including “I Feel The Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got A Friend” and the title song, BEAUTIFUL has a book by Tony® Award-nominee and Academy® Award-nominated writer Douglas McGrath, direction by Marc Bruni, choreography by Josh Prince and took home two 2014 Tony® Awards and the 2015 Grammy® for Best Musical Theater Album. BEAUTIFUL is currently playing to sold out crowds at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway.

BAT OUT OF HELL

June 27 – July 7, 2019

Winner of Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2017 and nominated for eight What’s On Stage awards in 2018, Jim Steinman’s smash-hit musical BAT OUT OF HELL comes to Dallas.

This exhilarating tale of star-crossed lovers “changed the way musicals are staged forever” (North West End) with its boundary pushing spectacle, thrilling performances and Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf’s legendary hits.

ROALD DAHL’S CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Willy Wonka is opening his marvelous and mysterious chocolate factory...to a lucky few. That includes Charlie Bucket, whose bland life is about to burst with color and confection beyond his wildest dreams. He and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a mesmerizing joyride through a world of pure imagination.
