2017-18 for Kitchen Dog Theater

Next season the K-Dogs have three mainstage productions, including a world premiere from the local trio of Cobb-Hartman-Federico. Plus David Carl returns with Trump Lear.

DallasKitchen Dog Theater has announced its 2017-18 season, and for the first time in a long time, there are only three mainstage productions. But, for the 20th anniversary of KDT's New Works Festival, there will be more staged readings (nine), plus PUP Fest, and they will not be produced simultaneously with the mainstage production.

That mainstage premiere in the NWF is a local vaudeville from KDT company members Cameron Cobb, Max Hartman and Michael Federico (Cohartico?), called Pompeii!! (yes, with two exclamation points). Interestingly, there will be another locally created vaudeville play happening around the same time, as Theatre Three revives Our Endeavors Theatre Collective's The Last One-Nighter on the Death Trail Featuring the Disappointment Players.

The other two mainstage productions are the regional premieres of Martyna Majok's Ironbound and Marco Ramirez's The Royale.

Add-ons for the season include the upcoming Fourth Dallas One-Minute Play Festival, and in December, Dallas native David Carl returns with his new one-man show Trump Lear (see video above). Carl performed his One Man Hamlet for KDT earlier this year.

Here's the release from Kitchen Dog Theater:

Kitchen Dog Theater proudly announces a power-packed lineup for its 27th season. The 2017-2018 season promises to excite and engage audiences with two regional premieres and a world premiere along with the 20th Anniversary Celebration of its New Works Festival, featuring nine premiere staged readings selected from hundreds of submissions from around the globe and the 17th year of PUP (Playwrights Under Progress) Fest, its award-winning high school playwriting program co-produced with local youth organization, Junior Players and the Dallas Independent School District.

In August 2017, KDT will present the 4th Annual One -Minute Pay Festival. KDT welcomes back Lake Highland’s own, David Carl, with his critically acclaimed one man show, Trump Lear in December 2017. Season subscription packages include a special discount to these programs.

All of Kitchen Dog’s 27th season and programs take place at Trinity River Arts Center (TRAC), the theater’s new temporary home in the Dallas Medical District: 2600 North Stemmons Freeway Suite No. 180, Dallas, TX 75207.

Kitchen Dog Theater’s 2017-2018 regular season schedule is as follows:

Regional Premiere

October 26 - November 12, 2017

Award-winning playwright Martyna Majok’s Ironbound is a darkly funny, heartbreaking portrait of an independent Polish immigrant for whom love is a luxury–and a liability–as she searches for the American Dream. Her hopes for a brighter future, which propelled her from her native Poland, continue to escape her. Over the course of 20 years, three relationships, and three presidents, she negotiates for her future with men who can offer her love or security, but never both.

by Marco Ramirez

Regional Premiere

March 1 - March 18, 2018

A talented, charismatic African-American boxer dreams of being the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. But it’s 1905, so his chances are as good as knocked out before he ever steps foot into the ring. Winner of two Obie Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama Desk Award, The Royale is inspired by the often overlooked story of Jack Johnson, a boxer who – at the height of the Jim Crow era – became the most famous and the most notorious black man on Earth.

World Premiere - New Works Festival Mainstage Production

April 19 - May 6, 2018

A cautionary tale of a society’s last doomed day in skits, scoots, skedaddles, and songs, Pompeii!! is a twirling, toe-tapping, tip-top evening of vaudeville entertainment as volatile as a conspicuous volcano on the immediate horizon. Through the structure and material of this uniquely American art form, Pompeii!! uses the flamboyance and joy of a vaudeville performance as a metaphor for the cycles of moral and social decline of both Ancient Rome and the roaring 20's — all the while giving the hairy eyeball to modern-day society.

20th Anniversary New Works Festival Staged Reading Series

May 30 - June 10, 2018

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of its New Works Festival, KDT is offering an expanded series of nine staged readings over three weekends in prime time! Showcasing some of the newest and most exciting voices and visions in contemporary theater, the winning plays are selected from almost 1000 annual submissions from around the globe. The NWF also features the 17th annual PUP (Playwrights Under Progress) Fest, an afternoon of short plays written and performed by some of Dallas’ finest young talent, co-produced with Junior Players and Dallas Independent School District.

August 19-21, 2017

80 original one-minute plays by 35 local playwrights + 10 directors + 60 actors = 1 insanely wild night of theater. This highly anticipated annual event has quickly become a community favorite!

December 7-10, 2017

Award-winning performer David Carl returns to KDT with his latest critically-acclaimed show, Trump Lear. This time Carl channels America’s Commander-in-Chief performing a one-man adaptation of King Lear in this unsettlingly uncanny, comedic tour-de-force!
