Season Eight for Stolen Shakes

The 2013-2014 season for Fort Worth's Stolen Shakespeare Guild expands with a new series.

The 2013-2014 season for Stolen Shakespeare Guild—its eighth—has been announced, and there are a few notable changes. For one, there's less Shakespeare. Typically we could count on three works by the Bard (or allegedly by him), and this time, there's only two, but one of them is a rarely produced problem play: All's Well That Ends Well. The season begins with another Brit of outsized reputation, Monty Python, and continues in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play series that was started in the the 2012-'13 season, with Picnic. Next season, it'll be Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

And interestingly, the group is expanding with a "Downstage Series," shorter runs of plays and musicals, and for the first year of this series (some in the galleries at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, and others in its basement), there'll be some Jane Austen, Martin McDonagh and Jason Robert Brown. The shows in the Upstage Series will continue at the FWCAC's Sanders Theatre.

Here's the official press release and the details of the season:

The Stolen Shakespeare Guild proudly announces our eighth season in Fort Worth. This brand new season is our biggest ever and features three musicals, The Stolen Shakespeare Festival, the return of the SSG Jane Austen Series, the continuation of our Pulitzer Prize Series, and some Irish theatre thrown in for fun. The SSG will be offering our traditional 5 show main stage series in the Sanders Theater and for the first time we will be offering an exciting alternative 3 show downstage season which will be performed in various parts of the Fort Worth Community Arts Center.

Stolen Shakespeare Guild UPSTAGE SERIES

All performances of the upstage series are at The Fort Worth Community Arts Center in the Sanders Theater, 1300 Gendy Street, Fort Worth, TX 76107.

STOLEN SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL “All The World’s A Stage”

AS YOU LIKE IT and ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL

By William Shakespeare

AS YOU LIKE IT stirs wit, sentiment, intrigue and love into a charming confection which challenges the traditional rules of romance. At its heart, a feisty but feminine Rosalind in love with the endearingly naïve Orlando, uses her disguise as Ganymede to counsel him playfully in the art of wooing. In ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL Helena loves the arrogant Bertram, and when she cures the King of France of his sickness, she claims Bertram as her reward. But her new husband attaches two conditions to their marriage he is sure will never be met.

April 18—May 4, 2014

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF

by Tennessee Williams

“Pulitzer Prize Series”

Is the story of Brick and his wife Maggie, who are celebrating the 65th birthday of Brick’s father, Big Daddy Pollitt. Big Daddy is bothered by the rocky relationship between his beloved son Brick, an aging football hero who has taken up drinking, and his beautiful and feisty wife Maggie. As the hot summer evening unfolds, the veneer of Southern Gentility slips away as unpleasant truths emerge.

GYPSY

Pride and Prejudice

Dramatized from Jane Austen’s Novel By Jane Kendall

“The bi-annual Jane Austen Series”

This production will be performed in the gallery space in the round.

By popular demand from our patrons we have chosen to present a new version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.  Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennet's most urgent priority. But with four sisters, an overzealous match-making mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it's difficult to escape the subject. When the independent-minded Elizabeth meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, she is determined not to let her feelings triumph over her own good sense -- but the truth turns out to be slipperier than it seems. In a society where subtle snubs and deceit proliferate, is it possible for Elizabeth and Darcy to look beyond his pride and her prejudice, and to make the best match of all?

March 14 – 15, 2014 —other dates TBA

THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN

by Martin McDonagh

This will be performed in the basement of the Sanders Theater.

Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland in 1934, THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN is a hilarious and strange comic tale in the great tradition of Irish storytelling. As word arrives on Inishmaan that the Hollywood director Robert Flaherty is coming to the neighboring island of Inishmore to film MAN OF ARAN, the one person who wants to be in the film more than anybody is young Cripple Billy, if only to break away from the bitter tedium of his daily life.

May 30 - June 14, 2014

THE LAST FIVE YEARS

Written by James Robert Brown

This will be performed in the basement of the Sanders Theater.

THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a contemporary song-cycle musical that ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break-up... or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. Written by Jason Robert Brown (PARADESONGS FOR A NEW WORLD), THE LAST FIVE YEARS is an intensely personal look at the relationship between a writer and an actress told from both points of view.
