Lake Simons

Hip Pocket's 37th Season

At Hip Pocket Theatre, the 2013 summer season brings a rare musical revival, two works from Lake Simons and two from Johnny Simons.

published Sunday, March 24, 2013

The 37th season for Hip Pocket Theatre was announced at an event at Fort Worth's Arts Fifth Avenue on Saturday night.

Two new works from co-founder and Artistic Director Johnny Simons close the five-show season. In there middle, there are two from his daughter, New York-based puppet artist Lake Simons.

The first is her version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which was presented a decade ago in the final season at HPT's former home at Oak Acres, and has also been performed in New York and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The second is A Tempest, based on Shakespeare's play.

The opening show of the 2013 summer season is something this group doesn't do very often: A musical that has been on Broadway, although in this case, not for very long. That would be Shinbone Alley, the 1957 flop that starred Carol Channing, Eddie Bracken, Eartha Kitt and Jacques d'Amboise. It's based on the Archy and Mehitabel stories by Don Marquis, in his columns for the New York Tribune.

Here is more about Hip Pocket's 2013 season:

Shinbone Alley

By Joe Darion, George Kleinsinger and Mel Brooks

June 7 – 30

Directed by Sharon Benge

Shinbone Alley is a musical written by Joe Darion, George Kleinsinger and Mel Brooks. It was based on Archy and Mehitabel, a series of New York Tribune columns by Don Marquis. The play focuses on a poetic cockroach named Archy, an alley cat named Mehitabel, and her relationships with a theatrical cat named Tyrone T. Tattersall and a tomcat named Big Bill. The Newspaper Man does the voiceover narration. In Hip Pocket's production, Johnny Simons is the Newspaper Man.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Adapted from Lewis Carroll by Lake Simons with music by John Dyer

July 12 – 28

Directed by Lake Simons

John Dyer will play the score live as a one-man band instead of a 4-piece band, as he did when they took this show to Edinburgh Fringe Festival. "We will tweak a few bits and pieces but will stay true to our original vision," Lake Simons says.

A Tempest

Adapted and directed by Lake Simons from Shakespeare

August 9 – September 1

A Tempest will be done with limited dialogue and mostly shared through imagery created through movement and puppetry.

Sassafras, Poppycock and Prittle Prattle with Lum and Abner

Written and directed by Johnny Simons

September 13 – October 6

No description available at this time. More info on this show to come soon.

Fuzz Bug Follies

Written and directed by Johnny Simons
