Artes de la Rosa Announces Mini-Season

Fort Worth's Latino arts group has named happenings in the last half of 2012, including pianist Eduardo Rojas.

published Tuesday, June 5, 2012

It's that time when the arts groups are announcing their 2012-'13 seasons (many of them already have), and in the case of Fort Worth's Latino company Artes de la Rosa, how about a half-season? The producers have named the shows on a "mini-season," happening in the last half of 2012. That's because beginning in 2013, they'll move to a calendar-year season.

For theater, the mini-season includes an original production taken from the popular animated series Dora the Explorer, with puppets and music; and a play about the Mayans presented in "cirque" style, The Fifth Sun. The season also includes a film festival, a Día de los Muertos festival, and a concert with acclaimed Colombian pianist Eduardo Rojas.

And if you're wondering about Artes' American Classics Initiative, in which artistic director Adam Adolfo re-imagines classic American plays with Latino themes, it'll be in the spring (the 2013 season hasn't been officially announed yet). The first two installments in this series were Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (2010) and Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge (2011). Adolfo has confirmed the next title: it'll be N. Richard Nash's The Rainmaker, in a Tejano-themed version in 2013.

Also, look for the third installment in an Argentinean cycle, with the first two being Kiss of the Spiderwoman (2011) and Maria de Buenos Aires (2012). Don't cry for our best guess for the third one, coming in 2013.

Here's what's up for the fall mini-season, from the news release:

In its ongoing mission to bring Latin art & culture to the North Texas Community, Artes de la Rosa is excited to announce it is changing its production season to a calendar season. The change will take effect January 2013. “This is an exciting opportunity for us,” says Artistic Director Adam Adolfo. “We have always produced on a September-to-May season schedule like many theatre companies in DFW, but by making this change we are able to provide additional programming during our summer months when families are eager for something to do together!” This change leaves 6 months in 2012 in need of programming and Artes de la Rosa is proud to announce the 2012 “Mini” Season starting this July! The “Mini” Season includes 2 theatre productions, a concert, a film festival, and Artes de la Rosa’s Annual Dia De Los Muertos Festival.

There are five suns in the Mayan cosmos representing Life, Rain, Cultivation, and Death. The Fifth Sun is a human being whose destiny is to save his people… On March 24, 1980, during Mass, Oscar Romero, Archbishop of El Salvador, was assassinated. Against the backdrop of Mayan and Catholic history, culture, imagery, and ritual, this powerful and acclaimed play presents the story of the people and the forces that transformed an ordinary man into a courageous leader. In celebration of the Mayan Calendar, we present The Fifth Sun in a highly ambitious ‘cirque’ inspired staging. Experience the magic and mystery of the Mayan Culture through the fierce and transformative imagery of theatre! The Fifth Sun is produced through special collaboration with the Latino Cultural Center of Dallas.
