New Season: Texas Ballet Theater

The 2011-'12 lineup for area's biggest dance organization has a few surprises.

published Tuesday, June 28, 2011

The official announcement of Texas Ballet Theater's 2011-'12 season hasn't been released yet, but at the 2010-'11 season finale, Don Quixote, a few weeks ago, the shows and dates were on a poster in the Bass Hall lobby. And yesterday, we received a brochure for next season in the mail. It's also on the group's website, so here goes.

The big thing to note is that, aside from a few dates of the annual The Nutcracker, there are no no performances at Dallas' Winspear Opera House, as the group has done for the past two seasons since the Winspear has been open. But there will be Dallas dates, namely a "Portraits Ballet Festival" for two weekends in April at the Wyly Theatre. This is interesting because it sheds light on the question of the Winspear being too expensive to rent, considering that the TBT canceled its June performance of Don Q there. Or is it that TBT is still struggling in this economic climate? Either way, don't expect live music to return anytime soon.

The new season will have two full-length ballets from Ben Stevenson, including one classic that he has never choreographed before: Giselle.

Here's the lineup:

  • Giselle, choreography by Ben Stevenson after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Oct. 21-23, 2011 at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth.
  • The Nutcracker, Nov. 25-Dec. 4 at the Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas; and Dec. 9-24 at Bass Hall. There will also be the return of the popular "The Nutty Nutcracker" at Bass Hall, on Dec. 23.
  • Dracula, based on the Bram Stroker novel, choreography by Ben Stevenson. Feb. 24-26, 2012 at Bass Hall.
  • Portraits Ballet Festival, two weekends of ballet at the Wyly Theatre at AT&T Performing Arts Center:
    • George Balanchine's Apollo, Ben Stevenson's Bartok and the world premiere of a ballet by TBT company member Carl Coomer. April 20-22
    • Ben Stevenson's Image, Val Caniparoli's Lambarena and a world premiere by TBT company member Peter Zweifel. April 27-29
