Diane and Johnny Simons

Hip Pocket's 35th Season

The summer lineup at Cowtown's outdoor theater includes a Hesse adaptation, a Lorca revisit and more Johnny Simons.

published Sunday, March 20, 2011

The 35th season for Fort Worth's Hip Pocket Theatre has been announced, and it looks like the break that Johnny Simons took last year (when he only wrote one of the six shows in 2010) has given him time to rest up. The five shows this year have three titles by him, two of them original. The other is an adaptation of a Hermann Hesse novel.

Johnny and producer Diane's daughter Lake will make a return, with a puppet piece called Wind Set-Up. The other title on the season marks the fourth time that the Hipsters have staged The Butterfly's Evil Spell by one of Johnny's favorite writers, Federico García Lorca. He and Diane adore the Spanish poet and playwright so much, in fact, they named their other daughter Lorca.

Descriptions haven't been provided yet, but here's what we could gather from the season lineup that has been announced on the group's website:

  • Girls from Girdleville Defend Men in BVDs from Bullies in Briefs by Johnny Simons. Looks like this is one of Simons' pantomimes, with characters he has used before. June 3-26
  • Wind Set-up by Lake Simons. Music composed by John Dyer. This show was performed in New York in 2010, and is described as "a dance between objects and people. Ordinary everyday objects blown around by the wind. They settle one by one. And one by one the person uses them. A simple formula for daily living set into motion by the random placement of objects brought by the wind." July 8-24
  • Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, which tells the story of the Brahmin boy who seeks enlightment. Stage adaptation by Johnny Simons. Aug. 5-28
  • The Butterfly's Evil Spell, Federico García Lorca's poetic drama about an injured butterfly stranded among other insects. Sept. 9-25
  • Paradoxical Abduction on Silver Creek by Johnny Simons. Anybody's guess here, but one of Simons' favorite themes is non-Earth life, and Silver Creek is the spot in West Fort Worth where Hip Pocket performs. Oct. 7-30

Shows at Hip Pocket Theatre are performed in an outdoor amphitheatre at 1950 Silver Creek Road. Showtimes for shows are 9 p.m. Fridays-Sundays from June to August, with the time changing to 8:15 p.m. in September in October.
