DallasJonathan Norton, a Pleasant Grove native whose plays have become prominent on Dallas stages, has been named the new Playwright-in-Residence at the Dallas Theater Center. Norton's latest play, Penny Candy, which was commissioned by and workshopped at DTC, will have its world premiere at DTC in June.

Norton follows DTC's former playwright-in-residence, Will Power, who had that position for six years.

Norton's plays include Homeschooled for African American Repertory Theater, My Tidy List of Terrors and Mississippi Goddamn for South Dallas Cultural Center (the latter won him the Osborn Award in 2016), short plays for Bishop Arts Theatre Center and Soul Rep Theatre Company, and Solstice for Theatre Three. Another new work, A Love Offering, will be produced by Kitchen Dog Theater in a future season.

Penny Candy is autobiographical and is set in Pleasant Grove. It runs June 5-July 14 at the Wyly Theatre's Sixth Floor Studio Theatre.

DTC has announced announced details for applications for its upcoming Dallas Playwrights Workshop. That information is in the news release below.

Here is the DTC news release:

2017 Regional Theatre Tony Award® Recipient Dallas Theater Center welcomes newest Playwright in Residence Jonathan Norton, who will be leading the Dallas Playwrights Workshop. In September 2018, TACA (The Arts Community Alliance) announced Norton as the newest Dallas Theater Center Playwright in Residence, as a part of the TACA Bowdon Family Foundation Artist Residency Fund. Currently accepting applications, Norton will lead Dallas Theater Center’s free workshop program that is open to six participants. Applications must be submitted by January 27 and can be sent to literary.dtc@dallastheatercenter.org.

“I am thrilled that Dallas Theater Center will continue to deepen our relationship with Jonathan Norton as he steps into the large shoes Will Power has left behind, after serving as Dallas Theater Center’s inaugural Playwright in Residence for six years,” said Kevin Moriarty, Enloe/Rose Artistic Director at Dallas Theater Center. “Dallas audiences have already seen Jonathan’s work at theaters throughout North Texas in recent years, including African American Repertory Theater, Soul Rep, Theatre Three and many others. This season he will make his debut at Dallas Theater Center with the world premiere of his stunning play, Penny Candy. As Playwright in Residence Jonathan will write a new play for Dallas Theater Center, as well as lead our Dallas Playwrights Workshop and teach in our education programs. In the coming years, as Jonathan’s work will be seen on a larger, national scale, it’s a great joy for all of us who love new plays in Dallas to know that he’ll continue to have a creative home here in our community.”

“Dallas Theater Center is responsible for many game changing experiences in my creative and professional life,” explained Norton. “I saw my first play at Dallas Theater Center and it changed my life. I got my first commission from a [League of Resident Theatre] house thanks to Dallas Theater Center, and coming this June, Dallas Theater Center will produce the world premiere of my new play Penny Candy. Now thanks to Dallas Theater Center, my first role as Playwright in Residence!”

In 2015, TACA developed the TACA Artist Residency Fund in response to the 2014 Perforum symposium when the local arts community expressed a need for greater support of unique artist-community engagement opportunities. To date, the fund has distributed $300,000 to 13 residencies. The fund awards up to $50,000 annually to support the development of innovative artistic residency programs in Dallas County while fostering meaningful interaction among arts organizations, artists, and the greater community.

Norton said, “the residency means a lot because it gives me the opportunity to be deeply involved in the life of the company beyond a single production. But most especially, my time at Dallas Theater Center allowed me to work with and be mentored by Will Power. I was in the first cohort of the Dallas Playwrights Workshop. Will created the workshop to support DFW area playwrights, and I am so excited to carry on this very important work. I hope to create a supportive yet challenging environment freeing artists to do their best work.”

Dallas Playwrights Workshop was founded by Will Power in 2013 to support DFW area emerging playwrights. Over the course of the workshop, participants will write the first draft of a new play, develop strategies to strengthen their voice and build their knowledge about the business of playwriting. The workshop is comprised of two eight-week sessions and will conclude with participants identifying programs and theaters seeking their work, craft artistic and development statements, and dive into the revision process. A final showcase to DFW area artistic leaders will be scheduled to take place in fall 2019.

Dallas Theater Center is accepting applications for the Dallas Playwrights Workshop through January 27. The ideal candidate has written at least one full-length play (60 pages minimum), has some practical experience as a playwright either in readings or production settings, is an active participant in the DFW arts community and is ready to take the next step forward in their creative and professional journey. Applications can be sent to literary.dtc@dallastheatercenter.org. Thanks For Reading
