Dallas — The Dallas Theater Center is prepping for a third installment of its Dallas Playwrights Workshop, conducted by playwright-in-residence Will Power, and they're looking for participants. The application deadline is this Sunday, Oct. 4. To be considered, you have to be available on Monday nights from Oct. 12 through Dec. 14.
Previous participants include Jonathan Norton, Jenny Ledel and Anyika McMillan-Herod.
Here's the press release with instructions about applying:
Dallas Theater Center Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty and Playwright-in-Residence Will Power announced today details for the third year of the Dallas Playwrights’ Workshop. DTC is currently accepting applications for the 2015 Dallas Playwrights’ Workshop. The application deadline is Sunday, October 4.
The Dallas Playwrights’ Workshop provides participants with the opportunity to work directly with Power, the award-winning dramatist and Mellon Foundation Fellow at DTC, to hone their craft, develop professional relationships and learn from their peers in a rigorous and supportive creative environment.
“It has been truly inspirational to watch the growth of the playwrights from DPW’s first two years,” said Lee Trull, Director of New Play Development. “It is a rare thing for an artist to be given the time and space to engage with their peers in focused, meaningful dialogue about their work. Will Power provides the kind of protected environment and determined guidance that makes creative expansion possible.”
Program participants will join Power at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre for 10 weekly sessions that will focus on developing dramatic works from the initial concept to the stage. Playwrights will work on a three-scene project throughout the fall semester that will culminate in a closed reading for workshop participants.
“Receiving feedback and guidance from a mentor like Will while collaborating with other Dallas playwrights on a weekly basis has been invaluable,” said past participant Janielle Kastner. “There are not many spaces entirely dedicated to honing the craft of playwriting, let alone committed to developing local playwrights. Having a safe yet challenging environment like Dallas Playwrights’ Workshop has led to my growth as a writer and fostered compelling new work from each member of the group.”
The Dallas Playwrights’ Workshop is intended for emerging and mid-career professional playwrights who live in Dallas-Fort Worth, who have previously written at least one play and are able to demonstrate a unique and compelling voice. Participants must be available on Monday evenings from Oct. 12 through Dec. 14. Interested writers should apply by submitting a completed application, a full length play (one or two acts), a 10-page excerpt from the same play and a one-page summary explaining why they would like to participate in the program, their writing goals and areas in which they’d like to develop. Applications are due via email toliterary@DallasTheaterCenter.org by Sunday, Oct. 4.
