Dallas — TheaterJones is co-hosting a screening in the National Theatre of London's NT Live Series at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas on Thursday, May 14. The production is George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman, and stars Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List, The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), and is directed by Simon Godwin.

The screening is at 6 p.m., and our TJ gathering begins at 5 p.m.

At the gathering, everyone who has a ticket to the film (whether purchased or won in our giveaway below) will get a complimentary glass of champagne (or water/soda), or a voucher for liquid refreshment if you want to have it at intermission; and there'll also be a cash bar with a TheaterJones cocktail. And we'll have a few snackies, but otherwise there's the Angelika concessions. We'll also have some ticket giveaways for other theater/dance/opera screenings at the Angelika, some general Angelika movie passes, and tickets to local performing arts events. Plus, there'll be a performance by violinist Mark Landson and tap dancer Katelyn Harris of Rhythmic Souls, performing together.

Man and Superman is Shaw's 1903 four-act drama (the screening is four hours with one 20-minute intermission) that plays off the Don Juan myth. The third act dream sequence is commonly produced separately as Don Juan in Hell. Above is a video interview with Fiennes, director Simon Godwin, and others. (There's also a trailer for the production below.) Here's the description:

Jack Tanner (Fiennes), celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor, seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann (Varma). But she takes it in her assured stride and, despite the love of a poet, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary. Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, is tipped off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain, where he is captured by bandits and meets The Devil. An extraordinary dream-debate, heaven versus hell, ensues. Following in hot pursuit, Ann is there when Tanner awakes, as fierce in her certainty as he is in his. A romantic comedy, an epic fairytale, a fiery philosophical debate, Man and Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live.

Right now we have a ticket giveaway to the screening. To enter to win two tickets, email and put MAN SUPERMAN FIENNES in the subject line. In the body of email, include your name, address, phone number and best email contact. This giveaway is for the Thursday screening at the Angelika Dallas only, but there is also a screening at the same time at Angelika Plano, as well as another screening, at both theaters, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. (We'll have a ticket giveaway for that at another time.)

You have until 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 to enter, and winners will be notified Wednesday before noon. If you don't win tickets, we'd still love to have you there; tickets are $20, and can be puchased at the box office or here.

And stay tuned for more TJ events and giveaways at Angelika screenings.
