Dallas — There has a lot of buzz about exciting new plays and musicals by local writers in recent years (such as this and this and this). Now, Dallas-based composer Patrick Emile has done something that hasn't happened with a locally based composer (that we know of): he has a musical being performed in the New York Musical Theatre Festival, considered one of the most important showcases for new musicals.

The work As We Lie Still is about a fictional turn-of-the-20th-century magician. It will be performed July 14-27 in a full production at the off-Broadway PTC Performance Space. It is one of 24 new works at the festival. Michael Serrecchia will direct, and they've started a crowdfunding campaign to raise $25,000 for the trip and performance. Find out more about that here.

You might know Patrick from his work with Denton's Sundown Collaborative Theatre. He composed music for the original work Happily Ever After, which was taken to the New York International Fringe Festival in 2011. For As We Lie Still, Patrick wrote the music and lyrics, and his wife Olivia—she played Christmas Eve in the Theatre Three production of Avenue Q in Dallas and at Stage West in Fort Worth—wrote the book.

Each year, the New York Musical Theatre Festival sees the nation's most prominent musical theater producers and other industry heavies and scouts, and garners audiences in the tens of thousands. A few of the shows that began life at the festival include [title of show], The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Altar Boyz and Yank! A few of the works, like Richard Cory and Desperate Measures, have been performed locally by Lyric Stage.

Here's more about As We Lie Still from the news release:

The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) and Patrick Emile present As We Lie Still. Performances will take place from July 14, 2014 through July 27, 2014 at PTC Performance Space (555 West 42nd St, New York, NY 10036). Official Opening is set for Monday, July 14 at 6:00 pm.

As We Lie Still is a new musical about Avi Leiter, a magician in New York at the turn of the 20th century who overcomes the struggles of a fledgling magic act.  His assistant, Josephine, is the key to his most astonishing trick.  Together they rise to Vaudevillian fame—until the trick goes awry.  20 years later, old, ruined, and alone, Avi must prepare one more illusion.  As We Lie Still uses a contemporary score to tell a story of love and forgiveness, of life and death, of this world and the next.

Patrick Emile (Music & Lyrics, Music Director) is a Dallas-based composer, lyricist, and arranger.  He recently received the 2014 Frederick Loewe Award for Musical Theatre. He was a 2014 composer for the New Dramatists Composer Librettist Studio in New York.  Past work includes scoring and arranging for Happily Ever After, an official selection of the New York International Fringe Festival 2011, as well as Starfield, a collaborative large-scale visual musical installation commissioned by The Dallas Arts District. As a Loewe Award recipient, he is currently working with playwright Carlos Murillo on a new musical based on the lives of John and Alan Lomax.

Michael Serrecchia (Director) became a part of American musical theatre history as an original cast member of A Chorus Line in 1975.  During his 18 years on Broadway, he worked with Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, Carol Channing, Kander and Ebb, and Cy Coleman.  His credits include plays and musicals at Theatre 3, Uptown Players, Contemporary Theatre of Dallas, ICT Mainstage, and WaterTower.  He was selected for the 2011 Natalie Skelton Award for Artistic Excellence for having invested his life “to artistry, teaching, and directing at a truly outstanding level.”

NYMF is the flagship program of The National Music Theater Network, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, and is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Now celebrating its 11th year, The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) exists to revitalize musical theatre culture by discovering and promoting new musical theatre artists, producers and projects, nurturing a vibrant and innovative artistic community, and connecting one of America's greatest art forms with a diverse, contemporary audience.

As We Lie Still plays at PTC Performance Space as follows: July 14 at 6pm; July 16 at 9pm; July 22 at 9pm, July 24 at 5pm; July 27 at 5pm. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at or by calling (212) 352-3101. For more information, please visit NYMF.orgThanks For Reading
