Fort Worth — Late on Monday night, after the final four concerto performances in the semifinal round, the Cliburn field was cut in half, narrowed from 12 pianists to six. Leonard Slatkin, chairman of the Jury for the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, made the announcement.

The finalists are:

Kenneth Broberg, 23, United States
Rachel Cheung, 25, Hong Kong

Yury Favorin, 30, Russia
Daniel Hsu, 19, United States
Yekwon Sunwoo, 28, South Korea
Georgy Tchaidze, 29, Russia

You can see bios and complete repertoire of all pianists here.

Favorin and Sunwoo were two of five pianists this year who were in a previous Cliburn competition (the others were Nikolay Khozyainov and Nikita Abrosimov, both in the 2013 Cliburn; and Tony Yike Yang, in the 2015 Cliburn junior).

The final rounds are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 3 p.m. Saturday. If you can't make it to Bass Hall for the event, you can view the final two days in a Fathom Events broadcast in movie theaters around the country. (More info on that below.) They will also be simulcast on a large screen in Sundance Square.

In the Semifinal Round, which took place June 1–5, 12 semifinalists each performed a 60-minute solo recital as well as a Mozart piano concerto with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Nicholas McGegan. They performed live at Bass Hall before the nine-member Jury and hundreds of patrons, as well as to a worldwide audience via the Competition’s live, fully produced webcast. The entire Competition can be viewed live and on demand at cliburn2017.medici.tv.

The Final Round

In the Final Round, June 7–10, each competitor performs twice. On June 7–8, each finalist will join the Brentano String Quartet for a piano quintet he or she has chosen from a list of four (by Brahms, Dvořák, Franck, and Schumann). Then, on June 9–10, each will perform a concerto of his or her choice with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, who is also chairman of the Jury this year.

The winners of the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be announced in the Awards Ceremony, which begins  7 p.m. Saturday, June 10 on Bass Performance Hall stage.
