Fort Worth — The Cliburn 2017 Quarterfinalists were announced Sunday evening, narrowing the field from 30 to 20. Jury chairman Leonard Slatkin called these two names after introducing his jury, and remarked that because the competition is getting thousands of views in the online streaming, all of these pianists have already changed lives.

Below is the list of Quarterfinalists. You can see bios and complete repertoire of all pianists here. See links to all of our reviews that have posted here.

Each of the 30 competitors of the Competition performed a 45-minute recital in the Preliminary Round, which took place May 25–28. They performed live at Bass Hall before the nine-member Jury and hundreds of patrons, as well as to a worldwide audience via the Competition’s live, fully produced webcast. The entire Competition can be viewed live and on demand at

Using a simple yes/no/maybe voting system, the jury narrowed the field of 30 to 20. Each juror submitted a list of 20 competitors he or she selected to advance, along with a list of “maybes” (used in the event of tied scores). The “yes” votes were tabulated, and the top 20 vote-getters advanced. For complete jury rules, click here.

In the Quarterfinal Round, each of the 20 quarterfinalists will play a recital not to exceed 45 minutes in length, with a program made up of works chosen by the competitor. A competitor’s program must not repeat any pieces from his or her Preliminary Round recital.

At the end of the Quarterfinal Round performances, 12 competitors will be chosen to advance to the Semifinal Round, which will run June 1–5. The semifinalists will be announced late in the evening on May 30. Thanks For Reading
