Dallas — To celebrate two decades of the Festival of Independent Theatres, the organization has launched a #MyFITStory campaign, and is highlighting the 20 Faces of FIT. These are 20 people, or groupings of people, who have made a significant impact on the festival—as the festival has had on them. Each made a video focused on their FIT story at a media day event on June 5.
TheaterJones is showcasing one of the Faces each day through the beginning of the festival, which runs July 13 to Aug. 4 at the Bath House Cultural Center. The videos were shot by FIT.
Next up: Danielle Georgiou, whose name accounts for the first two initials of DGDG, Danielle Georgiou Dance Group.
Georgiou has been a local dance and choreographer for nearly a decade, and has become known for her dance-theatre works, which are unlike any other pieces of dance we see in North Texas. See War Flower and Donkey Beach as examples.
Georgiou, who writes a monthly column for TheaterJones called Sixth Position, just received her Ph.D. and recently celebrated 10 years of teaching at the college level, first appeared in FIT in Upstart Productions' I Met You and I Screamed, written by Justin Locklear, another of the 20 Faces of FIT. They're also partnered, as she explains in the video above.
DGDG made its FIT debut in 2015 with The Show About Men. This year, she follows that up with Just Girly Things. The group is the first and only company with "dance" in the title to have performed at FIT, which is devoted to independent theater. But Georgiou's brand of dance fits right in.
