Dallas — Welcome to a new TheaterJones theater podcast, Up is Down, Left is Right, in which Brian Wilson, Monalisa Amidar and other hosts will talk to North Texas theatermakers and creatives about what's happening in town. In this first episode, Wilson chats with Susan Sargeant, Producing Artistic Director of WingSpan Theatre Company, which opens Two by Beckett on Oct. 4 at the Bath House Cultural Center (there's a preview on Oct. 3).
This is a pairing of two short plays by the great Irish absurdist Samuel Beckett, Not I and Footfalls. In the former, which you might have seen clips of on YouTube, the audience only sees a mouth, talking fast. Sargeant performs the disembodied voice. In Footfalls, Sargeant directs Jennifer Kuenzer as a woman pacing in front of her mother's room. As with many Beckett plays, language is key in both of them.
In the 15-minute conversation, Sargeant explains her love for Beckett — WingSpan has previously produced Happy Days and Play — and the origins of her theater company. She begins the podcast with a snippet of Not I.
