Pichanga from La Criatura of Santiago, Chile headlines the Fort Worth Fringe

Fort Worth — As a boy growing up in Chile, Manuel Ortiz loved performing in plays, and eventually studyied acting at the University of Chile. But it was during his yearlong study in Turin, Italy, where he fell in love with the theories of Jerzy Grotowski (of Towards a Poor Theatre fame). He returned to Chile and decided to create theater on his own terms.

He founded La Criatura (it means “Creature”) to create documentary theater dealing with reality and socio-political context as its main theme. So far the group has created three works: The Ninetynines (2011), which deals with the 99 percent protests; Signs of War (2013); and Pichanga (2015).

His shows tour to festivals and theaters around the globe, and Pichanga has been the most popular, having been performed more than 50 times in festivals in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, México, Spain, Italy, and Germany. This weekend, it makes its second U.S. appearance (after Florida) as the headliner at the third Fort Worth Fringe Fest, happening Sept. 7-8 at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center.

Pichanga” is a name given to the soccer matches that kids play on makeshift fields in the poorer neighborhoods in Chile. It is the true story of Cristian, the performer in this play, who was born in 1990 just after the Pinochet dictatorship was over, when kids “could start to dream again.” The play weaves together Cristian’s own personal story, recent Chilean political history, and Latin American soccer history, using Cristian’s dream of superstardom as the thread that ties the stories together.

TheaterJones chatted with Manuel Ortiz about the show and making his Texas debut.

TheaterJones: You create documentary style theater, and in the case of Pichanga, the text changes somewhat based on the performer?

The play is about the actor’s own history. He was born after the Pinochet regime, when the country began to dream again. This play has had three or four endings, and we keep changing it. I work with documentary theater because it’s very interesting to work with real stories.

You’ve performed the show in Latin America, Europe and the United States. Have audiences in each country been able to relate?

The play is not just about Cristian’s dream to become a superstar soccer player, it’s about dreaming. The whole world is in a [frightening] political moment and people need to keep dreaming. Every country we’ve performed it in, it works.

How did La Criatura come up with the concept for this show?

When we wanted to do a one-man show, [one of the actors] pitched something based on the idea of fútbol, or soccer. It’s really rich material on stage. Every kids’ dream is to become a famous athlete. The show is about fighting for public education in Chile, which was a big movement after the Pinochet dictatorship. The [soccer] battlefield becomes the theater and the stage.

How does La Criatura develop a work like this?

The actor gives the idea, such as the fútbol idea, and [the team] investigates the subject and talks to people who know it. We do take some dramatic liberties with. For Pichanga, we wanted to tell three stories: the story in Latin America, the story in Chile, and Cristian’s story. We develop it in workshops. I write on stage; I don’t write on the page.

» Pichanga, which runs an hour long, is performed in the Sanders Theatre at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. The performance times are:

  • 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7
  • 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8
  • 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8
