FEATURES & INTERVIEWS

The Tribe in Dallas Theater Center\'s <em>Hair</em>

Places! Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2017

Here's the week's best bets for theater, dance, classical music, opera, comedy, spoken word, cabaret and other performing arts in North Texas.

published Thursday, September 28, 2017

Welcome to Places!, which returns to a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, dance, classical music, opera, comedy, spoken word/poetry, cabaret and other performing arts on local stages and arts on film in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: Dallas Theater Center grooves and rocks with an immersive staging of the iconic rock musical Hair, Theatre Three gets dark with the musical version of Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine, the Cliburn gold medalist performs, there are divas galore and interesting music and dance options this week. In the list of shows that close this weekend, notice there are four world premieres closing, two of them by local writers (Dallas Theater Center, Undermain Theatre, Theatre Three, and TCU).

EDITOR UPDATE: The Festival of American Song, originally in this list at number four, has been canceled as of late Friday, Sept. 29. We've moved the list around accordingly.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options. The list is still growing with the new seasons.

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

THE BIG 12

THURSDAY SEPT. 28  thru  WEDNESDAY OCT. 4

 1  Hair

Dallas Theater Center | Wyly Theatre, Potter Rose Performance Hall | Dallas

This season marks Kevin Moriarty's 10th at Dallas Theater Center, and you'll remember his  first show to direct here was the rock opera Tommy at the Kalita Humphreys Theater. Now he's doing another iconic rock musical, Hair, and because it's at the Wyly Theatre, which is endlessly reconfigurable, you know there's some kind of experimentation with audience perspective. This immersive production of the groundbreaking piece (by Gerome Ragni, James Rado and Galt MacDermot) is performed in-the-round, with the band directly in the middle of the stage (in a circular pit, but fully visible and interactive), and the audience divided into four areas: garden, playground, lounge and kitchen. Great cast of locals in the Tribe and as some of the main characters. Ace Anderson is Hud, Tiana Kaye Johnson is Sheila, Chris Peluso (who was on the TV show Smash) is Berger, and Jaime Cepero is Claude. Vonda Bowling is the music director. There is some audience participation, but it's fairly harmless. There is no reserved seating, so get there about 45 minutes before curtain because the audience chamber opens 30 minutes before, and the line starts forming. Those dreadful Wyly seats are gone, and in their place are various kinds of chairs, including sofas, beanbags, and a barber chair that swivels so that its inhabitant can get a full 360 experience. | Sept. 28-Oct. 22

Thomas Ward in Adding Machine: A Musical at Theatre Three

 2  Adding Machine: A Musical

Theatre Three | Dallas

Ten years after Joshua Schmidt and Jason Leowith's musical version of Elmer Rice's 1925 play premiered, it's finally being done in North Texas. Directed by Blake Hackler, musical direction by Mark Mullino and choreography by Danielle Georgiou, the musical tells of a man whose job is replaced by a mechanical adding machine. This one is dark, which we love. The cast includes Thomas Ward, Jeni Roller, Allison Pistorius, Brandon McInnis, John Daniel Pszyk, James Chandler, Angela Davis, Kathryn Taylor Rose and Ashley Wood. | Previews Sept. 28-Oct. 1; opens Monday, Oct. 2 and runs through Oct. 22
