Double Places! Dec. 15-28, 2016

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Friday, December 16, 2016

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: Because there's not a lot of new openings in the days before and after Christmas, it's a double issue of Places! It covers through Wednesday, Dec. 28; with the Dec. 29 Places!, we'll have New Year's Eve arts happenings. There is still plenty to do, including Nutcrackers traditional and not, Messiah, a ballet of A Christmas Carol, TubaChristmas, carols, circus fun and the return of the irreverent musical The Book of Mormon. And much more.

There are a lot of shows closing in this cycle, what with everyone closing their Christmas shows and the year. Because of the two-week expansion, the list of Last Chance shows are divided into two sections.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options. Keep looking at the calendar over the next few weeks as we'll be entering all the new seasons for the arts organizations, so it will grow again!

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

The Hip-Hop Nutcracker

1  The Hip Hop Nutcracker + The Nutty Nutcracker + The Nearly Naked Nutcracker

Eisemann Center Presents + Texas Ballet Theater + Broads and Panties Burlesque | Eisemann Center for the Arts, Richardson + Bass Performance Hall, Fort Worth + Viva's Lounge, Dallas

If you want to see non-traditional versions of The Nutcracker, you've got three excellent choices this weekend and next.

First, Texas Ballet Theater does its annual Nutty Nutcracker, which is Ben Stevenson's production but with silly costumes riffing on pop culture and politics (you can bet Hil and Donald will appear this year). In years based, Lyle Lovett himself has made a cameo. Nutty is 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16 at Bass Performance Hall.

Then, one of the area's best-known burlesque outfits, Broads and Panties, does its annual The Nearly Naked Nutcracker, which is not really telling the full story of the Tchaikovsky ballet, but it does use some of the music as women and men do burlesque routines, including some aerial, as many of the Nutcracker characters. It is 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16 and Saturday, Dec. 17 at Viva's Lounge in Dallas.

And the one we're looking most forward to is the New York sensation The Hip-Hop Nutcracker at the Eisemann Center in Richardson. It is the full ballet, using Tchaikovsky's music with occasional interludes from a DJ and violinist. But the setting is contemporary New York and the dancing is street and various kinds of hip-hop. It's 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 at the Eisemann.

 2  A Ballet Christmas Carol

Avant Chamber Ballet | Dallas City Performance Hall

The Dallas Theater Center is not the only arts organization doing a stage version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol with a female Scrooge. Katie Cooper has created a ballet version for her Avant Chamber Ballet, and in this one, Scrooge is a mean dance instructor. Marley and the ghosts take her through a story about her love of and career in dance. And how about a holiday dance that's not The Nutcracker? | 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Dec. 15-16

Mistletoe Magic from Bruce Wood Dance Company

 3  Mistletoe Magic

Bruce Wood Dance Project | Dallas City Performance Hall

Bruce Wood Dance Project gave us this outstanding holiday cabaret last year in its studio space, and this year moves it to Dallas City Performance Hall. You know the BWDP dancers are always gerat, but imagine them dance around and with Broadway star Hugh Panaro (Phantom of the Opera, Side Show, many others) and cabaret great Liz Callaway, accompanied by New York piano great Joseph Thalken. If Callaway does her excellent, slowed-down, stalker rendition of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," it'll all be worth it. | 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20

The Book of Mormon comes to ATTPAC

 4  The Book of Mormon

AT&T Performing Arts Center Broadway Series | ATTPAC, Winspear Opera House, Dallas

The AT&T Performing Arts Center brings the tour of the hilarious and irreverent Trey Park, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez musical about two Mormon missionaries who get sent to Uganda and, well, everyone's life changes. And don't forget that the performance on Tuesday, Dec. 27 is Industry Night, which has discounted tickets and an after-party with the cast, giveaways and more. | Dec. 20-Dec. 31

 5  La Fête!

Lone Star Circus | Rosewood Center for Family Arts, Dallas

Lone Star Circus, our local purveyors of circus arts with a school and everything, presents its annual show in collaboration with Dallas Children's Theater. This year the Ringmaster is B.J. Cleveland, and local clowns Slappy and Monday return, plus national and international acts in hand-balancing, juggling, Hula-Hoop, canine show, aerial silks, contortion, and local clowns Slappy and Monday, and B.J. Cleveland as the Ringmaster | Dec. 27-Jan. 1

 6  The Nutcracker

Collin County Ballet Theatre | The Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts, Richardson

If you're hoping for a quality, traditional Nutcracker this week, go with Collin County Ballet Theatre, which performs with the Plano Symphony Orchestra and has Cuban ballet stars Adiarys Almieda and Taras Domitro of San Francisco Ballet.  | Dec. 17 & 20-22 (Dec. 17 performances at Frisco High School)

 7  Messiah + Messiah Singalong

Dallas Bach Society | Meyerson Symphony Center + Church of the Incarnation, Dallas

Since the Fort Worth Symphony musicians were striking and the FWSO canceled its annual performance of Handel's Messiah, the Dallas Bach Society has the only major local performance that's not in a church; it's at the Meyerson Symphony Center. And, on the next night, you can participate with DBS in a Messiah singalong at  Church of the Incarnation, Dallas | 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19 at Meyerson and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Incarnation

 8  A Celebration of Carols

Orpheus Chamber Singers | Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Dallas + Episcopal School of Dallas Chapel, Dallas + Custer Road United Methodist Church, Plano

Orpheus Chamber Singers is the area's finest choral group, and its holiday concert is not to be missed if you love choral music—and a lot of carols you don't normally hear. If ever. | 7 p.m. Saturday Dec. 17 at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church; 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18 at Episcopal School of Dallas Chapel; and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Custer Road United Methodist Church, Plano

Feathers and Teeth at Kitchen Dog Theater

Feathers and Teeth

For Kitchen Dog Theater, it's been a year of animals or non-human creatures reaping havoc on humans, as with the summer's The Thrush and the Woodpecker and the current entry, Feathers and Teeth, closing this weekend. In Charise Castro Smith's horror-comedy, the creatures are in the mind of a teenage girl reeling when her recently widowed father starts dating the nurse who took care of her mother as she was dying of cancer. Creepy, funny, thrilling and inspired. Directed by Lee Trull. | Closes Saturday
