Places! March 24-30, 2016

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, March 24, 2016

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: It's Easter weekend, so there's not a ton of new offerings, but still plenty to fill out our list. Such as: French/Algerian dance company Cie Hervé Koubi makes its Dallas debut, the Dallas Symphony has a premiere and Beethoven's Fifth, the classic story ballets Coppélia and Cinderella are performed, South Dallas Cultural Center takes it to "The Roots," and Sheran Goodspeed Keyton and Liz Mikel perform together in a play for the first time.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options.

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

 5  From the Mississippi Delta

DVA Productions | Fort Worth Community Arts Center, Sanders Theatre

DVA Productions opens its season with this terrific work by Endesha Ida-Mae Holland, which uses three actors playing multiple characters in myriad stories based on the author's coming of age in the said place of the title. Tyrone King directs, the production features Sheran Goodspeed Keyton and Liz Mikel. Amazingly, it's the first time those two have performed together in a play. | March 25-April 2

 8  Cinderella

Texas Ballet Theater | Bass Performance Hall, Fort Worth

The only reason this isn't higher in the list is because it was presented a few weeks ago at the Eisemann Center in Richardson. (In Richardson, it was canned music.) The stepsisters are played by men. | 8 p.m. March 25 and 26, 2 p.m. March 26 and 27

Can this high-flying, high-octane crew do battle against the imminent threat and save the town they love? Can they handle the arrival of a mysterious stranger whose helpful warning is tarnished by divided loyalties? | March 25-May 14

 ROAD TRIP!

Each week we'll highlight at least one performance in a city outside of Dallas-Fort Worth that's still reasonably drivable. Because this is Texas, that means five hours or less, one way. So, look for recommendations in Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, etc.

Grounded

The Alley Theatre in Houston presents George Brant's play about a pregnant ace F-16 fighter pilot has been reassigned to a new position, flying a remote-controlled drone from an Air Force trailer. Her 12-hour shifts hunting terrorist targets in the Middle East are followed by 12 hours at home, struggling as a wife and mother in suburban Las Vegas. | March 25-April 17
