<em>Jersey Boys</em>&nbsp;comes to AT&amp;T Performing Arts Center

Double Places! Dec. 17-30, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, December 17, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: We're combining the two weeks around Christmas because not much new opens, but there is still enough to populate the list. The tour of Jersey Boys returns, the Lone Star Circus is back and Turtle Creek Chorale goes "Home." Plus there's lots of dance, including Nutcrackers traditional and not, and an original work about a sad snowman. That should become its own emoji. Look for Places! to return in the week of Dec. 28, when we'll have a special New Year's Eve edition.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options. There are currently nearly 600 listings in our database!

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

THE BIG 12

Two Weeks: Thursday, December 17 through Wednesday, December 30

Slappy and Monday will again be the lead clowns for Lone Star Circus

1. Jersey Boys

AT&T Performing Arts Center Broadway Series | Winspear Opera House, Dallas

There are several types of jukebox musicals, from a pop catalog shoehorned into an original story (Mamma Mia!) to the bio-musicals, of which Jersey Boys is not only one, but probably the best. This story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons smartly chronicles the group's rise and fall, Behind the Music-style, and there's all that incredible music, and of course the actor playing Valli has that REALLY high voice. The Tony-winning hit is one of the most successful musicals of the 21st century, and the national tour makes its fifth stop in North Texas this week at the Winspear Opera House. Heads-up: In 2016, ATTPAC has another bio-musical as we have our first taste of the Carole King musical Beautiful. | Dec. 17-27

2. Zingari!

Lone Star Circus | Rosewood Center for Family Arts, Dallas

The Dallas-based Lone Star Circus presents its annual show at the Dallas Children's Theater space, and it's always a treat. This year's performers include the Anton Brothers in the Risley Act, Asaf Mor on the Cyr Wheel, Maya Panfilova and her House Cats (that's actual cats), Jesse Patterson on Hula-Hoops, Krill Rebkovets on Rola-Bola, Duo Resonance on hand-balancing, jugglers Sebastian and Rejean, SMU alum Stephanie Stewart on the Corde Lisse and Zaya and Mendee on aerial straps. Plus contortionists, live music and Dallas' own premier clowns, Slappy and Monday. | Dec. 26-Jan. 3

3. Home

Turtle Creek Chorale | Dallas City Performance Hall

It's the Turtle Creek Chorale's annual Christmas show, which will no doubt feature a mix of sacred and secular Christmas music. And it features Dallas diva Denise Lee. You know she's gonna get you in the spirit. Of Christmas, that is. | Dec. 17-20

» More info in our listing

4. Dick Gregory

Arlington Improv

If you don't know who this legendary Civil Rights activist, writer, social critic and comedian is—or why he was named one of the 100 greatest stand-up comics of all time by Comedy Central—then get to the Arlington Improv for his three post-Christmas shows. | 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27

» More info in our listing

5. Frosty: Songs of Redemption

House Party Theatre | Community Beer Company, Dallas

One of the best theater stories of the year is the emergence of House Party Theatre, a group of mostly SMU students/alum that do theater their way and in whatever spaces they find to do it in—art galleries, machine shops, private homes, beer halls. For the holidays they've come up with a one-night original musical that follows the famous snowman, downtrodden after the success of his TV special and, you know, that whole climate change thing. Directed by Chris McCreary, it's performed at Community Beer Company in the Dallas Design District. Can. Not. Wait. | 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17

6. The Nutty Nutcracker | The Nearly Naked Nutcracker

Texas Ballet Theater | Bass Performance Hall, Fort Worth

Broads and Panties Burlesque | Trees, Dallas

We love the traditional Nutcracker (see below), but we get super-excited about the prospect of these two irreverent takes on the holiday dance staple. The first is from Texas Ballet Theater, which goes wacky with pop culture references and outrageous dances every year for The Nutty Nutcracker. And while we can't confirm it, we'll just say that the last two years at Nutty have featured a surprise appearance by Lyle Lovett, who's a friend of TBT.

Then there's Broads and Panties Burlesque, which does The Nearly Naked Nutcracker, and that title is all you need to know. You'll never see the Sugar Plum Fairy in the same way. Proceeds benefit the North Texas Food Bank.

7. The Ten Tenors

Verizon Theatre, Grand Prairie

Yes, the Ten Tenors fall solidly in the genre we call "popera," but you'd be wrong to mistake their popularity for lack of skill. These guys are talented, charismatic, and yes, beautiful. That never hurts. For this show, they'll focus on holiday tunes, from "Sleigh Ride" to "White Christmas." | 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18

8. An Orpheus Christmas

Orpheus Chamber Singers | Transfiguration Episcopal Church, Dallas; Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Dallas; and Saint Jude Catholic Church, Allen

Consistently the most solid choral outfit in town, Orpheus Chamber Singers do three holiday shows of choral works from the classical canon, including Riu Riu Chiu by Mateo Flecha the Elder, O Heiland Reiss by Brahms, O Viridissima Virga by Hildegard von Bingen, Magnificat by Arvo Pärt, Song of the Pines by Abbie Betinis and In the Bleak Mid-winter by Holst.

9. The Nutcracker

Tuzer Ballet | Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts

Bolshoi Ballet on Screen | Angelika Film Center, Dallas and Plano

Collin County Ballet Theatre | Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts

As far as solid, traditional Nutcrackers go, not much locally beats the Tuzer Ballet or Collin County Ballet Theatre, both of which presents their annual Nuts at the Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts in Richardson. And for another remarkable Nutcracker, the Bolshoi Ballet's 2014 production can be seen on screen at the Angelika Film Centers in Dallas and Plano.

10. A German Baroque Christmas

Dallas Bach Society | Church of the Incarnation, Dallas

The Dallas Bach Society performs Advent music, starting with J.S. Bach’s cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Sleepers, Awake!), Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, calls the voice to us), BWV 140, also known as Sleepers Awake. | 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19

11. Tis the Season | Snow

Epiphany DanceArts | Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts, Richardson

imPULSE dance project | MCL Grand Theater, Lewisville

And here are two dance performances NOT about a nut-cracking device and toy soldiers fighting mice. Epiphany DanceArts presents "Tis the Season" and imPULSE dance project presents Snow. Click the links below to find out about each. | "Season" is Dec. 18-19; "Snow" is Dec. 19-20

12. Brave Christmas

EDITOR'S CHOICE

New to Places! Because Mark Lowry doesn't review a number of shows for either TheaterJones or the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, each week he'll mention something that he has seen (and possibly reviewed) that he highly recommends.

A Christmas Carol

Dallas Theater Center's annual production is frequently entertaining and heartwarming, but Kevin Moriarty's adaptation, which debuted in 2013, is particularly strong as its human story of redemption also comes with a message about commercialism, social class and the labor force. Christie Vela makes her directing debut at DTC, and it's their best production yet. And Hassan El-Amin as Scrooge? Inspired. There are several first-rate takes on the Dickens classic this year, such as this and this, but DTC Carol is tops. | Closes Saturday, Dec. 26
