Places! Dec. 10-16, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, December 10, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: It's a great week for world premieres: a play by Samuel D. Hunter at Dallas Theater Center, a composition by Christopher Theofanidis commissioned by the Nasher Sculpture Center, an adaptation of a popular Hanukkah story at Amphibian Stage Productions, and a song cycle by Jocelyn Hagen for the Women's Chorus of Dallas. Plus short plays by local writers, a new holiday cabaret and some new dance works too. Yay to new stuff for Christmas (and Hanukkah)!

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options. There are currently more than 600 listings in our database!

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

1. Clarkston

Dallas Theater Center | AT&T Performing Arts Center, Wyly Theatre, Sixth Floor Studio Theatre

We love the fact that Dallas Theater Center has had world premiere musicals or plays in every season that it has been in the Wyly Theatre, and that it's now to a point where those include works by local and national writers. In the spring, we'll get the premiere of David Lozano and Lee Trull's Deferred Action (a collaboration with Cara Mía Theatre), and this week we have a play by one of the rising stars of American theater, 2014 MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Samuel D. Hunter. The Idaho native made waves with such plays as A Bright New Boise and The Whale (the latter was recently seen locally at L.I.P. Service, featuring a highly praised performanced by Jason Leyva). In Clarkston, which is a companion piece to his Lewiston, premiering in Connecticut in 2016, the lives of two CostCo workers intersect. Davis McCallum directs. The photo of the cover is from Clarkston (by Karen Almond). | In previews through Dec. 10; opens Dec. 11 and runs through Jan. 31

2. A Thousand Cranes

Soundings: New Music at the Nasher | Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Montgomery Arts Theater

You might know composer Christopher Theofanidis from his work commissioned for the 2013 Van Cliburn International Competition, which was performed by the semifinalists. The Nasher Sculpture Center gives us a new work by Theofanidis, inspired by the story of an ill young girl’s hope in healing. Called A Thousand Cranes: Second Symphony for Strings and Harp, the work is performed by the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO). Other pieces included in the program are Theofanidis’ Gently Flow My Tears, Jörg Widmann’s Ikarische Klage, and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Chaconne. Presented in collaboration with Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. | 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12

6. Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins

Amphibian Stage Productions, Fort Worth

Amphibian Stage Productions ventures into its first holiday show with the world premiere of Scott Zenreich's adaptation of Eric Kimmel's Caldecott-honored story. Set in a small Russian village, the presence of wicked goblins keeps the town from celebrating Hanukkah, until one man, Hershel of Ostropol, takes it upon himself to evict the mischievous residents from the haunted synagogue at the top of the hill. 7. Black on Black | Mistletoe Magic

Dallas Black Dance Theatre | DBDT Studio in the Dallas Arts District

Bruce Wood Dance Project | BWDP Studio in the Dallas Design District

We are coupling these two events because they come from the two major local dance companies based in Dallas, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and Bruce Wood Dance Project, and they both happen at their respective studios.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre's Black on Black: A Holiday Dance Experience is party where you can mingle and catch some outstanding performances, and tickets are $30. | 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12

The Bruce Wood Dance Project event is a black tie fundraiser, and tickets for the cabaret seating event aren't cheap, $350-$1,000, which includes dinner (or you can buy a table beginning at $3,500). But check it: It features Broadway stars Hugh Panaro (who was the Phantom for many years and ValJean, among many other roles) and Liz Callaway (Follies, Cats), with music director Joseph Thalken, who happens to be the personal music director for Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters. And then there are the BWDP dancers. Spectacular. | Dec. 11-12
