<em>Becoming Santa Claus</em>&nbsp;at Dallas Opera

Places! Dec. 3-9, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, December 3, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: There is A LOT happening with the Dallas Opera this weekend, including another world premiere opera, a showcase of the fellows in its first Institute for Women Conductors, and a family opera of a Mozart work you probably haven't seen. Also, Theatre Three opens two shows, and there are Christmas staples galore, including The Nutcracker and more takes on A Christmas Carol. And Handel's Messiah. Oh, and there's two of Shakespeare's biggest downers: Hamlet and Richard III.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options. There are currently about 650 listings in our database!

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

THE BIG 12

Thursday, December 3 through Wednesday, December 9

1. Becoming Santa Claus | Institute for Women Conductors Concert | Bastien & Bastienne

The Dallas Opera | AT&T Performing Arts Center, Winspear Opera House

Whoa. This weekend for the Dallas Opera. First is the world premiere of the 90-minute opera Becoming Santa Claus by Mark Adamo (Little Women, Lysistrata), the THIRD world premiere presented by Dallas Opera in 2015, after Everest and Great Scott. The opera uses a made-up fairy tale to relate the story of the bratty kid who would become the great symbol of giving at Christmastime—and is inspired by several St. Nicholas legends and the biblical story of the three wise men. (See a video interview with Adamo above.) Mezzo-soprano Jenny Rivera plays the Queen and tenor Jonathan Blalock is Prince Claus. And as if that wasn't enough, the Dallas Opera's first Linda and Mitch Hart Institute for Woman Conductors is going on, and you can hear them conducting operatic arias in a concert on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Dallas Opera's family series does the Mozart opera Bastien and Bastienne, written when he was just 12. Whew. You can find out more about each of these events in the links below. | Becoming Santa Claus is performed 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, Wednesday, Dec. 9 and Saturday, Dec. 12; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6 | The Women Conductor's concert is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 | And the family opera is 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5
