Places! Nov. 12-18, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, November 12, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: Bruce Wood Dance Project proves it will continue after Wood's death in 2014 with two world premieres, plus a Wood revival; the Israel Philharmonic stops in Dallas; Stage West and TCU come together for The Heir Apparent; and you can catch major opera stars on stage both in the final performance of Dallas Opera's Great Scott and in a benefit for the Dallas Street Choir.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options. There are currently more than 700 listings in our database!

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

Dallas Street Choir | Hamon Hall at the AT&T Performing Arts Center's Winspear Opera House

The cost of a ticket for chance to see internationally acclaimed opera stars, including Frederica von Stade, Joyce DiDonato and others from the Dallas Opera's Great Scott, singing show tunes? $60-$100. Knowing that it's going to the great cause of the Dallas Street Choir, an outreach of homeless shelter The Stewpot? Priceless. | 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13

10. Desire Caught by the Tail

House Party Theatre | Ash Studios in Fair Park

You probably didn't now that artist Pablo Picasso also wrote poetry and two full-length plays. As you can imagine, they're weird. That won't stop House Party Theatre from taking on his Desire Caught by the Tail at Ash Studios in Fair Park. Chris McCreary directs. Intrigued. | Nov. 13-23

11. Death of a Salesman

Fun House Theatre and Film | Plano Children's Theatre

Jeff Swearingen, who is in his 30s, plays Willy Loman and terrific teen actor Kennedy Waterman is Linda, but never underestimate the folks at Fun House Theatre & Film, especially when research-hound Susan Sargeant is directing. Don't expect it to be a definitive Salesman, but what an amazing exercise for the youth actors, to take on the most significant American play of the 20th century, especially in the same year that the group has given its own spin on another play would vie for that title, A Streetcar Named Desire. Come to think of it, Fun House only has to find a way to do Long Day's Journey Into Night and A Raisin in the Sun and it will have tried its hand at what many consider the top five American dramas, considering they parodied Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 2013. And they've done Shakespeare, Stoppard and Mamet. | Nov. 13-21

This year’s master class will be led by April Berry, former principle dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Artistic Director with Dallas Black Dance Theater during the 38th season. | 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13-15
