Places! Oct. 15-21, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, October 15, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: The funny is at Gexa Energy Pavilion with the Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival, Aurora lights up the Arts District, Hambatch (Cumberbatch + Hamlet) hits town, there are two ballet takes on Dracula and you can catch a Bengali translation of a Brecht play. How's that for variety?

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options.

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

THE BIG 12

Thursday, Oct. 15 through Wednesday, Oct. 21

Amy Schumer is a headliner of the Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival

1. The Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival

Funny or Die | Gexa Energy Pavilion, Dallas

Usually when there's a daylong happening with multiple performers at Gexa, the attendees are generally dressed in black clothes with piercings and heavy eye-liner, as if the Texas sun wasn't a thing. Wouldn't that be a hoot if they paloozaed at this event featuring some of the funniest people in the comedy biz? This year the headliner is Aziz Ansari (Parks & Recreation), but the biggest buzz name of 2015 has been Amy Schumer, so look for her to be the big draw. Also on the bill: Bridget Everett, Ashley Barnhill, Anthony Jeselkik, Jeff Ross, Nick Thune, Steve Rannazzisi and T.J. Miller. Come to think of it, what do standup comedy lovers wear to this kind of event? We're about to find out. | 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18

2. Hamlet

National Theatre of London's NT Live | Angelika Film Centers in Dallas and Plano

Benedict Cumberbatch has always been a theater guy, but thankfully he's also become a film star—and a damn good film actor because he has classical theater training—which means he can bring audiences to the theater when he returns to the stage. Case in point: This production of Hamlet at National Theatre of London. It has recieved mixed reviews, but it's got a stellar cast of people who, like the Cumberman, know their Shakespeare. Catch it on the big screen courtesy of the NT Live series, at the Angelika Film Centers in Dallas and Plano (except the Oct. 19 showing, which is only in Dallas). | 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15; 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19; and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21.

3. Aurora

Aurora Creators and AT&T Performing Arts Center | Dallas Arts District

This is, at heart, a visual art event, but considering it involves light installations all over the Arts District, from the Wyly Theatre to the Cathedral de Guadalupe, coupled with performances at the museums and other spaces, we're gonna lump this in the category of "arts" and implore you to go. Performers include Dallas Symphony violinist Gary Levinson, Danielle Georgiou Dance Group, ArtCon's Erica Felicella and more. Parking down there will be cray, so consult the Aurora website before you head down. Might want to take the train. | 7 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16
