<em>Pippin</em>&nbsp;comes to Dallas Summer Musicals

Places! July 2-8, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, July 2, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print and/or digital publications out there, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: Boom! As in fireworks. The Fourth of July kind. That means there's not much new opening, but there are some notables, such as two important chamber musical events, the Mimir Chamber Music Festival in Fort Worth and Fine Arts Chamber Players' annual Basically Beethoven Festival. And in this cycle, the much-anticipated circus-heavy tour of the Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz's Pippin comes to Dallas.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options.

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

Pippin comes to Dallas Summer Musicals

1. Pippin

Dallas Summer Musicals | Music Hall at Fair Park

With apologies to Wicked and Godspell, this is by far our favorite Stephen Schwartz musical. This tour is of the Diane Paulus-directed 2013 Broadway revival of the 1972 musical, in which a performance troupe tells the story of Pippin and his father Charlemagne, and uses circus performance to tell that story. Bob Fosse choreographed the original, and this is done in his story by Chet Walker. The circus performance is by Montreal's 7 Fingers, who you might remember for their excellent show Traces, which hit Dallas a few years ago. After its run in Dallas, July 7-19 at Music Hall at Fair Park, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals; it will go to Fort Worth's Bass Hall July 21-26 | July 7-26
