Places! March 12-18, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. This week is all about Wilde hipsters and artsy bohos. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, March 12, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle, and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print or digital publications, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: Classics take over as Kitchen Dog Theater has a funky new riff on Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest and The Dallas Opera opens one of the most beloved operas, Puccini's La bohème. There's also a world premiere composition called Tibet Fantasia from Voices of Change, a new piano competition, bunny puppets, storytelling in Denton, women's poetry, former American Idol contestant Frenchie Davis and more.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function, where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options.

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

THE BIG 12

Wilde/Earnest at Kitchen Dog Theater

1. Wilde/Earnest

Kitchen Dog Theater at the Mckinney Avenue Contemporary

Local writer and director Lee Trull thinks there is nothing so sacred that it can't be adapted or played with, and we have to agree. Now let's see if his cotton candy-colored hipster take on Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest does irreverent in the right way. Also important with this production is the fact that while Kitchen Dog Theater is known as the local company to champion new(er) plays, and has done new work by local writers in its annual New Works Festival (including Matt Lyle's Barbecue Apocalypse last year and Vicki Caroline Cheatwood's Ruth in 2012), this entry is significant in that it's a world premiere by a local writer in the middle of the season, not part of the New Works Festival. This is a trend we'd love to see more of. Collaborators include local artist Rob Wilson on set design and choreographer Danielle Georgiou on movement (there are mini-trampolines!). Jencey Keeton of local band French 75 wrote original musical for it. You can read more about Wilde/Earnest at a link below. | March 13-April 18

2. La bohème

The Dallas Opera at AT&T Performing Arts Center, Winspear Opera House

Dallas Opera winds down its season with one of the most-performed works in the repertoire, Puccini's La bohème, which was the basis for Jonathan Larson's award-winning musical Rent. It has a great cast of international stars, and in an interesting collaboration, local outfit Art Conspiracy will have artists creating art (painting, sculpture) in the lobby of the Winspear during the performances and intermission, at every performance. Also, don't miss the annual live simulcast at AT&T Stadium, which is March 21. | March 13-29
