Pianist Mariangela Vacatello opens the Cliburn\'s Chopin Festival

Places! March 5-11, 2015

It's our weekly list of performing arts events opening on local stages. This week is all about Loop, Chopin and Women Choreographers. Plus, the rundown of last-chance shows.

published Thursday, March 5, 2015

Welcome to our weekly mega-list of performing arts happenings on TheaterJones! It covers a Thursday-to-Wednesday cycle, and rounds up our picks for the best theater, classical music, opera, dance, comedy, spoken word/poetry and performing arts on film that are opening on North Texas stages and in movie theaters. Of all the local print or digital publications, it's the only weekly list of best bets that covers the range of performing arts—and only performing arts.

This week: WaterTower Theatre's Out of the Loop Fringe Festival kicks up, as does the Cliburn Foundation's Chopin festival, and Avant Chamber Ballet celebrates women choreographers at the Eisemann Center. In fact, when you consider all the dance at Loop and a few other happenings this week, it's a BIG dance week. More please.

This list doesn't have everything happening in this week's cycle, but we've hit the highlights. For more listings, click the red calendar button at the top right of the page, and then you'll see a search function, where you can search for events by presenting company, venue, title, description, date range and more options.

Note: Theater productions that have opened in a previous cycle and are in the middle of the run are not in the list below, but you can find them in the listings (see paragraph above). When a show is in its final weekend, we'll mention it in the "Last Chance" section of Places!

Get out and support the arts!

1. Out of the Loop Fringe Festival

WaterTower Theatre, Addison

The 14th annual event was postponed a day because of snow and ice, but the Loop festival— which features 21 performing artists and organizations, a ton of new work and a higher concentration of dance than in the pastis back. Check out our Out of the Loop special section on the site, where you'll find schedules, show descriptions, features, interviews, reviews and more. Among the highlights: Bedford native Jenn Dodd performs her latest solo show Melanchomedy: Funny Scenes About Sad Folks, Miniature Curiosa's An Excruciatingly Ordinary Toy Theater Show, Patrick O'Brien performing Wallace Shawn's The Fever, and Elizabeth Berkman's ¡My Sweet Bat-ceañera! | March 6-13

2. Cliburn Festival: The Works of Chopin

The Cliburn Foundation at the Renzo Piano Pavilion at Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth

The Cliburn Foundation has really been changing up its presenting season in recent years, with the addition of shows at the Kimbell Art Museum and Live Oak Music Lounge. The group is of course known for its International Piano Competition, plus its amateur and new youth piano competitions, but now it has what we hope is the first of composer-dedicated festivals. This year it's all about one of the greats, Romantic pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin. There are five concerts, wth different soloists and guests at each. The line-up is below. | March 5-8

  • 7:30 p.m. March 5: Mariangela Vacatello, piano, and Allan Steele, cello; program includes Four Ballades
  • 7:30 p.m. March 6: Pianist Tomoki Sakata; program includes Scherzo No. 1 in B Minor

In this first batch: Elizabeth Gillaspy, Emily Hunter, Puder and guest choreographer Amy Diane Morrow, whose work String Theory premieres.
