Every week in Places!, TheaterJones rounds up the weekend and coming week for theater, music, opera, dance and comedy performances that are opening/happening on North Texas stages.

This week: Soul Rep Theatre Company is back with its first New Play Festival in a decade; Fun House kills a critic; and step into flamenco at the Ochre House. Oh, and there's not one but TWO theater productions happening in private residences.

Click on the slideshow icon in the floating menu at bottom left of your screen, and you'll see photos from some of these productions and events.

When Going Green Goes (#%@!)  is one of the shows at Soul Rep Theatre Co.'s eighth New Play Festival

1. The recent resurrection of Soul Rep Theatre Company means that their New Play Festival is back, July 31-Aug. 3. This will be the eighth one. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, this event was at Frank's Place in the Kalita Humphreys Theater, but now it's at the Margo Jones Theatre in Fair Park. The plays being presented this year are:

  • Breakfast by New York-based playwright Yusef Miller
  • Wonderful World by Dallas writer Jonathan Norton
  • The Ballad of Jane Elkins by Anyika McMillan-Herod
  • When Going Green Goes (#%@!) by Guinea and Keith Price

New to Places! Each week we'll highlight at least one performance in a city outside of Dallas-Fort Worth that's reasonably driveable. Because this is Texas, that means five hours or less, one way. (So, look for recommendations in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, etc.)

Next week, Oklahoma City's Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma opens a production of Sondheim's gorgeous A Little Night Music, running Aug. 5-9. It stars Broadway actors George Dvorsky as Fredrik, Dee Hoty as Desiree and Emily Skinner as Charlotte.
