Every week in Places!, TheaterJones rounds up the weekend and coming week for theater, music, opera, dance and comedy performances that are opening/happening on North Texas stages.

This week: The Dallas Black Dance Theatre sends off retiring founder Ann Williams in style; the first Dallas Solo Fest kicks up at the Margo Jones Theatre; and Stage West has some Unmentionables.

1. Dallas Black Dance Theatre tributes retiring founder and artistic director Ann Williams with its Spring Celebration, 7:30 p.m. May 16 and 17 at the AT&T Performing Arts Center's Winspear Opera House. There will be guest performances from Bruce Wood Dance Project, Texas Ballet Theater, Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico and more.

2. The first Dallas Solo Fest, presented by Audacity Theatre Lab, is May 15-25 at the Margo Jones Theatre in Fair Park. It features eight solo performers, three from Dallas and five from New Orleans, New York, Boston, Austin and Los Angeles; plus workshops and more.

3. Stage West does the area premiere of Bruce Norris' The Unmentionables, about a group of white vacationers to a West African country whose fortunes change, begins previews May 15, opens May 17 and runs through June 15

4. Soundings: New Music at the Nasher presents a tribute concert to Van Cliburn, May 15 at the Nasher Sculpture Center. It features pianist Leon Fleisher, the Juilliard String Quartet and pianists from the Cliburn Foundation.

5. Theatre Three opens the comedy Shear Madness in its basement space, Theatre Too!, May 16-July 20

Hear a panel discussion on the State of Dance, featuring Danielle Georgiou, Joshua L. Peugh, Mona Kasra and TheaterJones editor Mark Lowry, 7 p.m. at CentralTrak, the UT Dallas Artist Residency in Exposition Park.

The National Theatre of London's production of King Lear, starring Simon Russell Beale, is shown on screens at the Angelika Film Centers in Dallas and Plano (7 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at both locations); and at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, presented by Amphibian Stage Productions (2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21).
