Places! March 20-26

Here are some of the performing arts events opening on local stages this week. Plus, the list of last-chance shows.

Every week in Places!, TheaterJones rounds up the weekend and coming week for theater, music, opera, dance and comedy performances that are opening/happening on North Texas stages.

This week: The Dallas Opera does a critically loved masterpiece; Undermain Theatre and Dallas Children's Theater have area premieres; and DeSoto's new Uptown/Downtown Music Series kicks off the "uptown" portion of that with a famous baritone.

And in case you're not keeping up, the Dallas Comedy Festival continues through Saturday, March 22. We're doing daily reviews of the fest (here's the review from Wednesday, March 19).

Click on the slideshow icon in the floating menu at bottom left of your screen, and you'll see photos from some of these productions and events.

THE WEEKEND TOP FIVE

1. It's hard to believe that the Dallas Opera's production of Erich Korngold's Die tote stadt is the Texas premiere of the late-romantic masterwork, but that's what they say. Our critic Gregory Sullivan Isaacs has much to say about the opera, too—and he does in this audio clip recorded for the Inside the Dallas Opera series.

Undermain Theatre does the area premiere of Jackie Sibblies Drury's We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South-West Africa, From the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915. If that sounds like a mouthful, the simpler We Are Proud to Present... works, too.

4. Dallas Children's Theater presents the North Texas premiere of the bilingual play Mariachi Girl, about a girl whose family won't let her be in their mariachi band because, well, she's a girl.
