Dallas Solo Fest: Workshops

Here's the scoop on the workshops offered at the first Dallas Solo Fest.

published Wednesday, May 14, 2014

Dallas — In addition to the performances, several workshops will be offered by the artists involved with the Dallas Solo Fest.

The workshops are a chance to get to know the performers a little better and learn what they have to share about the solo theatre experience. Students can walk away with a fresh perspective and a few new tools in your creative tool belt.

Here's the breakdown of the workshops:

Fringe Fest Touring 101
with Grant Knutson

Have a great (portable) fringe show? Want to tour it around to fringes and festivals like the Dallas Solo Fest in the U. S. and Canada? Join us for an intro to the logistics side of touring; the different ways fests pick & pay their artists, how to choose which fests will work best for you, how to schedule, budget & market on the road. The class will be a discussion, with the chance to check out marketing materials from different festivals and touring shows. Additionally, we'll schedule a personal follow-up with artists who want to discuss their individual shows doen the line. Through his company, Minion Productions, Grant Knutson helps independent artists develop their shows, fund raise and tour.

Dates/Times: Saturday, May 17 @ 1 pm and Saturday, May 24 @ 11:30 am
Workshop duration:  1.5 hours
Cost of workshop: $20

Make Work/Make Play
with Alexandra Tatarsky

In this workshop we will draw from traditions as varied as commedia dell’arte, surrealist writing and circus arts to make work in the spirit of play.  We will develop new material together through improvisations and other techniques that remind us how to create something out of nothing.

Dates/Times: Saturday, May 17 @ 1:00 pm
Workshop duration: 2 hours
Cost of workshop: $20

Blending the personal and the political
with David Mogolov

Everybody has a story, and everybody has an opinion, but the two can reinforce and amplify each other in powerful and hilarious ways. In his writing, David Mogolov unites personal history with larger cultural and political trends and ideas, blending comedy and commentary into theatrical essay. This workshop is open to anybody looking to anybody interested in taking a recursive approach to their own closest-held stories, digging into them again and again to find all the points of connection to larger themes and movements.

Dates/Times: Saturday, May 17 @ 3:00 pm
Workshop duration: 2 hours
Cost of workshop: $20

Be a Media Darling
with Elaine Liner

Can't afford a publicist but need better media coverage? Learn the quickest, easiest steps for getting free, positive coverage on all media platforms in this workshop. Elaine lays it all out: Why the press release is useless; how to shoot better photos of your shows; how to make critics your allies (they're not the enemy). Elaine's taught this workshop to hundreds of artists, actors, playwrights, comedians -- and for the participants of the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. A must for solos!

Dates/Times: Saturday, May 24 @ 1:00 pm
Workshop duration: 2 hours
Cost of workshop: $30

The Naked Comedy Lab
a workshop in hilarious vulnerability

with Deanna Fleysher

You’re funny, but are they on the edge of their seats? Are they breathless to see what crazy thing you do next? They could be. You just need to strip down and get naked. Naked Comedy demands your body, your guts, and all your fluids. We want to see how funny you can be without thinking or trying. Through play, we will explore your unique connection to the audience, the bravery required to be vulnerable, and the gratification that comes with letting go. Expose yourself (metaphorically speaking), and make people laugh.

NOTE: This work is very physical. Workout wear only. No shoes, no jeans. You’re lucky you’re allowed to wear clothes.

Dates/Time: Saturday, May 24 @ 3:00 pm

Workshop duration: 3 hours
Cost or workshop: $30
