Along with soul-robbing heat and increased margarita intake, August in Fort Worth usually means a new edition of SceneShop. 2020- as strange as it has been- will be no exception in this regard. On Saturday, August 8, at 8 pm, SceneShop will debut "Here I Am." a collection of monologues and more, on YouTube. The reason for the "premiere" time is that some of the performances will be live that night, while others are pre-recorded. After that, of course, the show will continue to be available on our channel, SceneShop, Fort Worth, TX.
"Here I Am" is, with one exception, constructed with monologues. This was a practical choice as much as theatrical; under present circumstances, we could not ask directors and actors to meet for rehearsals. The loose theme of "Here I Am" means that the pieces will speak to themes of isolation, separation, loneliness, feeling part of a crowd, or distanced from the crowd; sounds like 2020, huh? And sometimes, of course, a person just has something to say.
"Here I Am" will feature new scripts written by Christopher Bradley, Rob Bosquez, Straton Rushing, Natalie Gaupp, Chris E. Gepp, Stephen Ellis, Lynda Rodriguez, Joshua Eguia and Steven Alan McGaw. Some writers - Ellis, Rodriguez, Bradley- will perform their own works. The rest of the acting ensemble includes Susan van Belkum, Winston Daniels, Cody Jackson, Mark Makin, Sid Polezcek, Adam Whittington, Steven Cashion, Debbie Dacus, Peggy Bott Kirby and Jeffrey Watson.
One benefit of an online presentation is that geographical distance is no obstacle to involvement. Ellis, Gepp and Whittington currently live in California, while Bradley works as an instructor at Arizona State. Watson- who last performed with SceneShop in 1997- lives in Denton. And though an online production doesn't necessitate an intermission, there will be musical performances scattered thru the show.
This production would not come together as it will without the digital know-how, affable leadership, and infinite patience of our technical director and online stage manager, Michael Carver Simmons. He is matchless.
