The Bath House Cultural Center and the City of Dallas, Office of Cultural Affairs are pleased to announce the line-up for the twenty-first annual Festival of Independent Theatres. Now entering it’s third decade of innovative, ground-breaking theatre, the festival is once again the place to find the city’s most diverse offering of summertime entertainment.

As is tradition, this year’s line-up includes eight independent theatre companies, some long-time participants and some fresh to FIT, performing eight one-act plays paired in two show blocks. Plus, two brand new cabaret performances by two divas of the Dallas music scene. Jodi Wright shares her memories of childhood in Songs My Mama Taught Me and Kathryn Taylor Rose returns with her new show Nobody Knows What They’re Doing.

Once again, this year’s line-up is anchored by FIT founding member WingSpan Theatre, Co. making their twenty-first consecutive appearance. WingSpan presents Jo and Louisa, a conversation between the author of Little Women and her greatest creation, as imagined by acclaimed local playwright Isabella Russel-Ides. Jo and Louisa marks the fourth Russell-Ides work to have its premiere at the festival.

Also making return appearances are two beloved FIT companies, each known for their quirky, creative, comedic flair. Matt and Kim Lyle star in the offbeat Nerve by Adam Szymkowicz for Bootstraps Comedy Theater while Audacity Theatre Lab presents Brad McEntire’s solo Victorian adventure tale, The Beast of Hyperborea. This year’s final returning company, Imprint Theatreworks, presents Dirty Dirty Night Squirrel, the standout of Imprint’s First Impressions Reading Series, by local playwright Cameron Casey.

New to this year’s festival are Leos Ensemble, Lily & Joan Theatre Company, Flexible Grey Theatre Company, and The Very Good Dance Theatre. In addition to the new pieces by Russell-Ides, McEntire and Casey, this year’s festival features the work of Dallas writers Nicole Neely, Colby Calhoun and William Acker, as well as Austinite Alice Stanley.

The 21st annual Festival of Independent Theatres runs July 12-August 3, 2019 at The Bath House Cultural Center. A full performance schedule is forthcoming. Tickets on sale mid-June. For more information, visit www.festivalofindependenttheatres.org or call 1-800-617-6904.

2019 FESTIVAL LINE-UP

Audacity Theatre Lab – The Beast of Hyperborea by Brad McEntire: Brad McEntire does it all in this zany one-person Victorian adventure tale about a fabled beast, a mysterious island and the brave team of explorers set off to discover them both.

Bootstraps Comedy Theater – Nerve by Adam Szymkowicz: Jeff Swearingen directs Bootstraps founders Matt and Kim Lyle in this quirky, off-beat comedy about a quirky, off-beat couple on their desperate search for love.

Flexible Grey Theatre Company – Sky’s the Limit by Alice Stanley: Flexible Grey advances their mission of inclusion with Alice Stanley’s fractured fairy tale about a non-binary knight on an adventure to save a trans princess who never needed saving.

Imprint TheatreworksDirty, Dirty Night Squirrel by Cameron Casey: On the last day before her child and grandchild put her in a nursing home, Dorothy takes a trip to the zoo that doubles as a lesson about life, love, family relationships, and the feeding habits of the North American Opossum.

Leos Ensemble – small hours by Ed Hime and Lucy Kirkwood: A subtly haunting glimpse into the life of a young mother’s harrowing, yet incredibly human battle with postpartum depression.

Lily & Joan Theatre Company – Marilyn, Pursued by a Bear by Nicole Neely: Marilyn Monroe awakens in a mental institution and is forced to confront her issues with depression, darkness and doubt, as personified by the shadow of a looming bear in this companion piece to Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale.

The Very Good Dance Theatre – The 1st Annual Gay Show written and conceived by Colby Calhoun and Will Acker, choreographed by Danielle Georgiou: The glitz and glamour of an old-school beauty pageant acts as the framework for a candid discussion of visibility, representation and all the ways in which we make a spectacle of putting humans on display.

WingSpan Theatre, Co. – Jo and Louisa by Isabella Russell-Ides: An imagined conversation between Louisa May Alcott and her most famous creation, Little Women’s Jo March, that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about both.
