African American Repertory Theater (AART) presents the regional premiere of Jire’h Breon Holder’s award winning play TOO HEAVY FOR YOUR POCKET. It is an illuminating and moving play that depicts how the civil rights movement impacted the lives of two young African American couples, exploring the cost of freedom for the younger generation.
Holder has set his play in the summer of 1961. The Freedom Riders are embarking on a courageous journey into the Deep South. When twenty-year-old Bowzie Brandon gives up a life-changing college scholarship to join the movement, he’ll have to convince his loved ones—and himself—that shaping his country’s future might be worth jeopardizing his own.
AART’s presentation of TOO HEAVY FOR YOUR POCKET, directed by Regina Washington, is supported in part by Mountain View College in Dallas, Texas. Its all-star cast includes Christopher Dontrell Piper, Raven Lawes, Brandon McKnight, and Shundra Brown.
