The Dallas-based theatre group asked playwrights, both local and abroad, “What play have you always wanted to see about the holiday season but never have?” and called for new scripts that were “new, fresh, and a little off-beat!” The show, titled A Very Nouveau Holiday, is eight short plays about the holidays. In previous years only the work from local playwrights was selected, but N47 this year includes a work from N47 veteran playwright Jonathan Kravetz who is now based in New York. Every play is a premiere of a new work. The plays include a range of topics: from hilarious Christmas public service announcements given by the Virgin Mary and Santa Claus himself, to more touching pieces about how the holidays can bring to the surface both familial love and familial conflict.
Jim Kuenzer, a founding member of N47 and contributing playwright, credits the show’s continued success to this variety: “When you look at what other people are doing in theatre during the holidays, it often feels like it’s one of four or five shows. Because we use the short format, writers have a chance to stretch and experiment. We like to offer a break from the usual holiday fare.”
The playwrights this year are: Franky Gonzalez , Allison Hibbs, Jonathan Kravetz, Jim Kuenzer, Brad McEntire, Ben Schroth, Greg Silva, and Christopher Soden.
