Les Arts Florissants, composed by Marc Antoine Charpentier in 1685, is being newly staged in full costumes with new choreography by Catherine Turocy for eight dancers and eight singers. This French masque-like allegory draws on aspects of mythological and natural symbolism familiar to Baroque audiences. The story begins with the Arts of Music, Poetry, Painting and Architecture, shown flourishing under the glorious and peaceful reign of Louis XIV. The warriors dance and the chorus sings until Discord and his dancing furies enter, trying to hold on to war and revolution. How will this struggle end?
