The full title of this unique piece is The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade. The Marquis de Sade, as an inmate at the Asylum of Charenton, staged plays that were performed by fellow inmates. This “play within a play” is his newest work., It is about the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat during the French Revolution and the three days leading up to that event in the late 1700’s.
Directed by Jonathan Bryant, this production has been cast without the usual constraints of gender specificity for characters. For example, the Marquis de Sade is portrayed by the talented Polly Maynard. Other characters may, or may not, be cast in the traditional gender that the role originally calls for. Due to subject matter and language, this is strongly recommended for mature audiences only.
