5YEARS embraces Artistic Director Kimi Nikaidoh’s motto, “Onward, upward, and outward.” BWDP moves onward with Bruce Wood’s Liturgy; upward with Nikaidoh’s world premiere, Find Me; and outward with Bryan Arias’ world premiere, currently untitled. Liturgy premiered on July 9, 2005 at Bass Performance Hall in honor of the 10th birthday of the Bruce Wood Dance Company. Liturgy is set to five sections of J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass for chorus and orchestra. Fort Worth critic Leonard Eureka described it as “an indictment of religion and an affirmation of faith.” Wayne Lee Gay said, “One of the most significant works of dance created in America.” About her world premiere for BWDP, Nikaidoh muses, “I intend for the piece to alternately soothe, stir, and rejuvenate. It is about renewal and the incomparable delight brought by restored love, health, or hope.” Set to a suite of Van Morrison songs, Nikaidoh’s work is sure to engage and uplift.
BWDP is thrilled to present a new work by New York-based choreographer/performer Bryan Arias. Through a series of duets, Arias explores the mystery and the magic of love. Arias is a renowned performer with the internationally acclaimed, Vancouver-based Kidd Pivot, and formerly danced with Nederlands Dans Theater and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. As a choreographer, Arias received First Place and Audience Choice awards for his work, Without Notice, at the Sixth Copenhagen International Choreography Competition.
