Experience the renowned legacy of Bruce Wood’s repertoire, welcome the outstanding talents of emerging choreographer and acclaimed dancer Albert Drake, and celebrate half a decade of ground-breaking dance at BWDP’s 5YEARS. A “Get to Know the Artists” Q&A immediately follows each show.
“This evening of dance celebrates the company’s five-year landmark and the incredible artistic spirit of its late, beloved founder. It will make your spirits soar and delight your senses,” said acting artistic director Kimi Nikaidoh. 5YEARS opens with Wood’s signature Requiem, set to Mozart’s iconic Requiem Mass in D Minor. This dance is a tour de force of energy and spirit. “I take the traditional and turn it on its ear,” Wood said of the piece. “It’s extremely athletic and very urban—very sharp and angular. It’s completely different than what you’d expect.”
Following Requiem is the world premiere of the BWDP commission, Whispers, by BWDP alum Albert Drake. Set to contemporary music by Max Richter and Steve Reich, this glorious dance is about living life in gratitude. “The commissioning of new work testifies to the enduring influence of Bruce Wood,” said Nikaidoh. “His consistently brilliant work continues to inspire many of his dancers to choreograph. BWDP gives them a reputable foundation on which to do so.”
The evening reaches a climax with the triumphant Polyester Dreams, Wood’s tribute to the music and culture of the 70s. Polyester Dreams is set to the music of Gladys Knight, Jackson 5, and Marvin Gaye, among other pop stars. Enjoy the sensationalism of the disco era.
