Interview with the special effects guy behind WaterTower Theatre's The Lieutenant of Inishmore.

published Monday, January 10, 2011

Steve Tolin, owner and operator of Tolin FX in Pittsburgh, has become the go-to guy for productions of Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore, working his special effects magic with guns, corpses and a certain kitty-cat that meets an awful fate.

He has been on site at WaterTower Theatre for its area premiere of the play, which opens tonight. It's his ninth time to work on this show at theaters across the country, as well as in Lima, Peru.

Tolin FX specializes in film effects and monster-making, but he discovered his love for theater when he was asked to do the effects for a production of McDonagh's The Pillowman. From there, it evolved into being a specialist for Inishmore.

His work at WaterTower includes the cat puppet and several other bloody puppets, as well as gun and blood effects.

In this video interview, Tolin, a cat lover, talks about the production, and why he loves doing special effects.
